Elder Scrolls Online reaches new milestone

While fans have been waiting for a new single player Elder Scrolls game since 2011, the series’ MMO entry – The Elder Scrolls Online – has been trucking along for the past decade, seeing consistent support and updates from the team at Zenimax Online Studios. This has helped the MMO carve a pretty large niche for itself, having now surpassed a total of 24 million players.

Bethesda recently held their Elder Scrolls Online 2024 Global Reveal showcase in which the company unveiled the MMO’s next expansion ‘Gold Road’. Alongside this, the team revealed that ESO has reached a new milestone, having now officially surpassed 24 million players.

For context, ESO hit 10 million players back in November 2017; three and a half years after it had launched. The figures have steadily increased since then, with ESO seeing between 1-2 million additional players each year. The full list of milestones can be seen here:

  • November 2017: 10M
  • June 2018: 11M
  • June 2019: 13.5M
  • January 2020: 15M
  • March 2021: 18M
  • October 2021: 19M
  • January 2022: 20M
  • July 2022: 21M
  • April 2023: 22M

Unlike most MMOs, ESO doesn’t require a monthly subscription to access, although the game does release paid expansions. Still, it is tough to compare ESO to other MMOs which require a paid monthly subscription on top of paid expansions. Regardless, with 24 million players it is safe to assume The Elder Scrolls Online is doing just fine.
