Epic Games announces “huge pivot” towards “maximum AI acceleration”

Epic Games has been rather bullish on generative AI, with CEO Tim Sweeney publicly and continually expressing his support for the controversial technology. In what appears to be the company’s biggest move yet towards its adoption, Sweeney has announced “a huge pivot” at Epic with the intention of retooling the publisher for “maximum AI acceleration.”

Taking to Twitter to make what is seemingly a big announcement, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney revealed that the company is about to go through some major changes internally, writing: “We have a huge pivot underway here at Epic, moving developers around to retool for maximum AI acceleration.”

Unsurprisingly, Sweeney made sure to note that this pivot won’t negatively impact developers at Epic, stating: “The aim isn’t to do the same stuff with fewer people, but to enable everyone here to build MORE and BETTER stuff, and to bring the benefits to all teams using Unreal.”

In the immediacy following this announcement, known industry insider Jason Schreier took to Bloomberg to offer additional context, claiming that part of this shift begins with Epic’s unannounced Star War / Marvel shooter, where-in developers were “instructed to implement an ‘AI first’ production model using tools such as Anthropic’s Claude” – with one director telling staff: “No more hand-written code.”
