In a game that includes five separate tofu skins, fans were surprised to find that the unlockable and purchasable costumes in Resident Evil 2 Remake weren’t equally ridiculous. That’s not to say there aren’t questionable costumes; you just don’t have the character wandering around in anything so absurd that it breaks the game’s seriousness.
Some costumes are unlocked by beating the game, and others can only be obtained through DLC or in free updates. Here is a ranking of them all, based on how good they look.

Classic 98 Leon

Considering Resident Evil 2 Remake is a remake, it’s understandably going to be littered with homages and tributes to the original. Classic 98 Leon is one example of a tribute to the original game that might resonate with some fans, but probably isn’t one anyone will use very often.

Staying true to its 1998 graphics, Classic 98 Leon is frankly ugly, with a blocky figure and hands that look like they belong on a doll. So, it looks pretty silly and distracts from the game’s horror tones. It comes in a free update.

Classic 98 Claire

Classic 98 Claire has the same update as Classic 98 Leon and looks equally bad. Her arms look bizarre, and she seems angrier than the modern Claire. It breaks the immersion by watching a highly realistic zombie bite into a Claire that looks like a slightly more evolved character from Minecraft.
Granted, some might like these costumes for their nostalgic value, but that’s the only reason anyone would like these costumes. Playing the game with them would be more for the quirkiness than for really liking them.

Classic School Uniform (Sherry)
- Equip Claire’s Classic Outfit.
While you can’t select it from the costume menu, Sherry has an alternative look she wears when Claire is in her classic outfit. Sherry’s alt costume is a very old-looking school uniform, similar to the one she dons in the original RE2.
So, she has shorts up to her waist, bright red shoes, and a bow that makes her look a bit like a sailor. Because it’s so old-school, it looks a bit silly in the game and doesn’t blend in as well as her default outfit.

Tank Top
Partway through the story, when the normal outfits are equipped, Claire ditches her jacket and starts running around in a tank top and jeans. Once you’ve beaten the game, you can have this as your outfit for the entire adventure.
It isn’t a particularly eye-catching getup. It’s a simple look that is inferior to her default one. After all, the jacket is the best part of the original costume, so it’s sorely missed with this one.

Classic Tank Top

Since there is a classic version of Claire’s jacket outfit, it should come as little surprise that there is also a Tank Top version.
However, the best part of the Classic Jacket costume is the iconic design on the back, which is obviously missing here since there is no jacket. So, you’re just left with a basic tank top and small shorts. Therefore, it isn’t the most exciting look. You need to complete Claire’s story in Hardcore mode to unlock it.

Noir Claire

The Noir set of costumes comes with an in-game filter that turns everything black and white, just like in the old Noir movies. Even with the filters, this costume is rough. With high heels she never kicks off during a zombie apocalypse, an untucked shirt, a long tie for zombies to grab onto, and the silliest-looking pair of pants with suspenders, this isn’t a great costume.
There may be some hardcore hipsters who like this look, but it’s likely more out of rebellion against modern fashion conventions than a legitimate attraction to the costume itself. You can get the Noir outfit for Claire by buying the Extra DLC Pack.

Noir Leon

Leon’s Noir costume is a little better than Claire’s, as he looks more put together in his gray vest and vertical shoulder holsters. But he looks very out of place in modern Raccoon City, surrounded by more conventional-looking zombies, police officers, and scientists.
Again, the Noir black-and-white filter helps a little, but it looks like an old movie where they could only afford to dress the main character in a costume. Everyone else just wore what was in their closet… except Mr. X; he kind of has a Noir theme going on. Like Claire’s outfit, Leon’s Noir Costume is obtained via the Extra DLC Pack.

Casual Leon
On your first playthrough, you will notice that Leon wears a nice gray jacket and blue jeans before reaching the Police Station. After you’ve beaten the game as the hero, you can spend the whole adventure in this outfit.
It isn’t as iconic as his Police Uniform, but it isn’t bad. The jacket, in particular, looks quite nice. The getup isn’t as fancy as some of the others in the game, but there are certainly worse outfits either protagonist can wear.

Alternative Claire
This might be a little controversial, but Alternative Claire’s outfit, an homage to the original Resident Evil 2, isn’t a great outfit. The leather tank top with the Made In Heaven caption and some awkward red short shorts over black short shorts make it an outdated outfit for the year this remake came out.
Sure, there’s nostalgia for the older game, but there’s a reason they updated the default costumes for the remake. You can get this outfit by beating the game as Claire.

Police (Injured)
Leon goes through a lot during the game, so it’s no surprise that his Police uniform gets ripped and he has some wounds that need bandaging. This results in the Police (Injured) outfit.
On a regular playthrough, when using the normal outfits, you will end up in this attire. Yet, after you complete the story, you can select it as your default look. It seems a bit strange for Leon to be that messed up before he even tangles with any monsters, so it’s odd to wear it from the start. That said, it looks really good deep into the game.
