Every Video Game Needs A Character Like Hollow Knight Silksong’s Sherma

I hate bugs. I shiver at the thought of one suddenly crawling across my field of vision, while I cannot even look at pictures of tarantulas without leaving the room or hurling my phone across it. So you’d think that Hollow Knight: Silksong would be the last game on my mind.

But Team Cherry has perfected the art of turning creepy crawlies into adorable dudes with white faces, black eyes, and plenty of lovable personality. There isn’t a single character in Silksong I haven’t cracked a smile while stumbling upon, while others have me clutching at my chest in heartfelt warmth. They sing, dance, and express themselves in so many ways, even with no spoken dialogue being present. In fact, that might make them even cuter.

Few are cuter than Sherma. A singing little dude with a heart of pure gold that I will protect with my life.

Sherma Is Officially The Cutest Video Game Character Of 2025

Hollow Knight: Silksong excels at pulling the player into a false sense of security. Its world is bitterly dark and dystopian with dark forces having forced its citizens into a state of perpetual terror. Survival is a daily pursuit that doesn’t come easy, and yet the majority of bugs Hornet is likely to stumble across still welcome her with warmth. Well, aside from all the ones trying to kill you.

Team Cherry is aware that the world and mechanics it has created are punishing, so it balances that with wholesome character designs you can’t help falling in love with. And one of the first faces you stumble across after the opening village is Sherma.

You are probably familiar with him by now, and how he passionately bangs two metal sticks together while singing a little tune to hopefully open the stubborn door standing before him. Chat with him, and he’ll immediately exude bubbly determination, almost like he’s oblivious to the dark and dangerous world that surrounds him. Within seconds, my cuteness aggression instinct kicked in, and I vowed to protect Sherma with my life.

When Silksong first released earlier this month, a lot of people assumed that Sherma was a girl, like so many of the other prominent NPCs. Turns out he’s a little man with a love for music.

Hornet will eventually make her way around to the other side of the door that Sherma seeks to open, and upon doing so he’ll be convinced that his wonderful little tune was the cause. I didn’t have the heart to correct him, so I went on my merry way hoping to meet Sherma at a new location later on in my unforgiving journey. Even now, he remains a bright spark across Silksong’s world who fills it with good vibes and good tunes in equal measure.

No Other Silksong Character Hits Quite Like Sherma

Hornet and Sherma play music together in Hollow Knight: Silksong, but Sherma is afraid in Whiteward.

I’m still making my way through the early stages of Silksong right now, so I’m yet to stumble upon some of the larger towns featuring a wider variety of NPCs. But I have heard that our boy Sherma will follow in Hornet’s footsteps before eventually finding refuge somewhere. I even spotted him dozing away in the corner of the screen within an official screenshot. It’s impressive that a game so focused on skill, exploration, and repetition can still create deep characters like Sherma, where so much awaits beneath the surface.

Sherma also represents hope in a broken world, and the importance of finding joy in little things, so we have enough reason to keep on going. Hornet might pass them by in silence as they only ever exchange a few words with the small bug, but in those fleeting moments alone you can define a sense of meaningful companionship. There is a reason why the fandom has latched onto the brilliance of Sherma so immediately and why his charming song has been played over and over again, no matter where you look.

As I slowly make my way through Silksong, I cannot wait to see more of him. Then the wait begins for Hollow Knight 3: The Song of Sherma.
