Fallout has always been billed as a series with three lead characters: Lucy, Maximus, and The Ghoul. And yet, for two seasons now, we’ve been waiting for them to actually get some proper screentime together.
Now, it sounds like we’ll be left waiting even longer. Fallout showrunner Geneva Robertson-Dworet has confirmed that season three will see Lucy and Max embark on their own story, instead of joining The Ghoul on his journey to Colorado.
The Ghoul Is Leaving Max And Lucy Behind In Fallout Season 3
Speaking with Collider, Robertson-Dworet explained how the trio’s paths will diverge this time around.
“[The Ghoul] doesn’t know where in Colorado he’s going, so [he’s] got to figure that out,” says Robertson-Dworet. “Where exactly we are heading next season, we are, of course, hinting at, but not trying to give solid answers to yet.”
However, there is one thing she can confirm – we won’t see Lucy and Max join The Ghoul. “You’re right that Lucy and Max are not headed to Colorado. Where are they going next, we hope is a question people are asking themselves.”
So, if The Ghoul is destined to explore Colorado throughout season three and Lucy and Max are not, that means we’re switching up the dynamics once again. Season one gave us a mix of Lucy/Max and Lucy/Ghoul, whereas season two was mostly Lucy/Ghoul, with a crumb of Max/Ghoul towards the end.
This will likely disappoint fans, as they’ve long been waiting for this trio to actually be a trio. But in fairness, there are a lot of plot threads to get through right now, with the revived Legion, the NCR, Vault-Tec, the Vault Dwellers, the Brotherhood, and a few more I probably forgot about. So, it makes sense to split up the duties a bit until some of them are wrapped up or get thrown into another plot thread.
Right now, it looks like Lucy and Max will find themselves in the middle of the Mojave while it’s at war, but are also likely to link up with Norm and Claudia after the mess with the other Vault dwellers. Meanwhile, the rest of the Vault-Tec conspiracy centres around The Ghoul’s family, but he also seems to be getting pulled into something with the Enclave. The Brotherhood could fit into either one of those stories, so we’ll have to wait and see how that pans out.
