This article contains spoilers from the Jujutsu Kaisen and JJK Modulo manga.
Jujutsu Kaisen brings all the excitement back with the release of its spin-off sequel, Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, and the official trailer of the film Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution. Fans have all the reasons to celebrate, as Gege Akutami’s world of curses and sorcerers isn’t slowing down anytime soon, despite the conclusion of the original manga series back in 2024.
There is plenty of room to expand the lore of Jujutsu Kaisen, especially in Modulo. While the spin-off manga has been announced to only run for roughly three volumes of chapters, the possibilities within Jujutsu Kaisen: Modulo remain vast. In fact, Gege Akutami has already hinted at the next monster to emerge in Jujutsu Kaisen, and that is Maki Zenin’s grandson, Tsurugi Okkotsu.
Maki Zenin Is Considered a Monster in Jujutsu Kaisen
Maki Ended the Zenin Clan
- Maki Zenin is one of the strongest members of the Zenin Clan.
- With Mai gone, Maki Zenin unlocks the full power of her Heavenly Restriction.
Maki Zenin has come a very long way in the Jujutsu World, from being dismissed as a failure within the prestigious Zenin Clan to becoming a formidable Jujutsu Sorcerer with no curse energy. She is one of the best female characters Gege Akutami has written in Jujutsu Kaisen, and many fans are rallying behind her, especially in her upcoming role in Season 3.
While Maki has been confirmed to have passed away in the JJK sequel, she was feared for her reputation as a monster, having ended the Zenin Clan in the most brutal ways possible. Who would have thought that Maki, once scorned as the weakest member of the Zenin clan, would ultimately become the very monster her family feared? Even her father, Ogi, felt shivers in his spine when he saw Toji Fushiguro in Maki.
Of course, this would not have been possible without Mai Zenin’s sacrifice. With her around, Maki would fail to unlock the full power of her Heavenly Restriction, so she deserves respect for giving up her life. With that, Maki proceeded to exact her vengeance, eradicating the Zenin Clan with her newfound monstrous abilities.
Maki Zenin’s Successor Is Tsurugi Okkotsu in Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo
Maki and Tsurugi Are Similar to Each Other
Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo has just started, with three chapters available to read online. Even so, a lot of information has already been released, and fans are already coming up with theories about where the story is headed. One of the most interesting details confirmed already is the identity of Maki Zenin’s successor, and that is none other than Tsurugi Okkotsu.
Similar to Maki, Tsurugi has little to no cursed energy, but there are inconsistencies in how his abilities have been portrayed so far. According to Tsurugi’s sister, Yuka, he has no cursed energy, but based on the statement of the abductor from the first chapter, Tsurugi has incredibly low levels of cursed energy, rather than none at all. This is important in understanding Tsurugi’s cursed energy because the distinction could drastically change how his abilities, especially his heavenly restriction, are explained.
I’m gonna make em say, ” You don’t need that ring, you’re Maki’s grandson after all.”—Tsurugi Okkotsu
Still, fans are certain that Tsurugi Okkotsu is a lot like Maki Zenin, not only because of his lack of curse energy but also because of his reliance on physical combat. It won’t be a surprise if Tsurugi follows Maki’s footsteps, especially now that Gege Akutami confirms he is truly similar to Maki, suggesting that his character growth may mirror the same journey that defined Maki’s ascent to power.
Tsurugi Okkotsu Could Be the Next Monster of Jujutsu Kaisen
Tsurugi Okkotsu Wants to Be Just Like Maki Zenin
As revealed in Jujutsu Kaisen: Modulo Chapter 2, Tsurugi Okkotsu wants to be like Maki Zenin, someone who can prove his family wrong with her true power and thrive in battle despite lacking cursed energy. For Tsurugi, Maki likely represents the ideal path forward, having been able to reject her fate and rewrite her own story. If he could walk the same path, he could be just as powerful as Maki someday.
Maki may be gone, but her successor is dead set on carrying out her will. Maybe, at that point, Tsurugi could return the ring to his sister, knowing that he no longer needs it as a symbol of protection but as proof that he has become strong enough on his own.
