Helldivers 2 has been running strong for a couple of years now, but Arrowhead is about to introduce a pretty major change to the PC version by swapping out the anti-cheat system for a new one. The change is expected to break many mods released for the game.
In an update announced this week, Arrowhead confirmed that it is dropping its previous GameGuard anti-cheat in favour of Easy Anti-Cheat. The reason? The PC mods started getting far too out of hand.
Arrowhead didn’t really have an issue with mods in the PC version of Helldivers 2 previously, as the majority of them were simple cosmetic replacements that don’t impact gameplay. However, the studio says this year it noticed an increase in the number of players running ‘cheat’ mods and taking them outside of private lobbies, impacting the experience of other players.
As a result, GameGuard is out and Easy Anti-Cheat is now in. That’s not to say there’ll be no cheaters moving forward, but EAC is a proven quantity used widely throughout the industry, so it is a better starting point for Arrowhead as they look to clamp down on cheats.
KitGuru Says: Breaking mods is never going to result in a hugely positive reaction but if players were taking it too far and taking gameplay-impacting mods into public matches, then Arrowhead didn’t have much of a choice but to make changes.
