How One Trailer Sold the WRONG Game

This was one of the greatest game trailers of all time. But it didn’t represent the game at all. However, it resulted in Dead Island spawning sequels such as Dead Island 2 and spiritual successors like Dying Light, Dying Light 2, and Dying Light: The Beast.

I never knew that Dead Island 1 and Riptide are actually kind of dark comedy Homur zombie game or silly game until the release of Dead Island 2 LOL.

It's because of this trailer I bought the Dead Island games, still playing the new one

Dang, was this video shadow banned or something? It’s nearly impossible to get sub 1 thousand views after hitting 100k and 500k consecutively, what happened with this one?

I've had an interesting history with this game as I had one of my dinglenuts of a friend created an RPG based on the opening parts of the game and only later that year showed me what the game was based on solely on the trailer. Only after a decade did I finally play the game and see the contrast of the trailer. I really need to talk to my friend and get his opinion on all this.

Dead Island Riptide also had a heartbreaking trailer where a couple was trapped in their yacht surrounded by zombies.

I got to talk to Phil Lamaar once, the voice of Sam B in the game. He said that after that trailer dropped and got so many people hyped that the devs had to go back and change a lot of things in the game to match the trailer tone, which ultimately meant removing any humor. Phil had to go back and re-record a lot of his lines, changing his character from comic relief to just deadpan.

Isn't it normal for a developer to outsource the animation for the trailers? At least the cinematic trailers. Maybe they usually have more direct instructions.

Dead Island 2 did have a very iconic reveal trailer too, however in its case it went in a wholly different direction, being much sillier. The game did end up in a 10 year long development hell, so its at the time famous trailer has become a lot more obscure.
