How To Beat Frida Vargdottir In Norse: Oath Of Blood

Norse: Oath Of Blood is a story-rich turn-based strategy game that immerses you in a world of vengeful Vikings and blood-soaked lands. Amidst the building of a new community and training fighters to avenge your father, you will meet some interesting characters and fierce foes.

The very first boss battle you will encounter is during The Woodcarver’s Chisel mission, which starts with a tough battle and ends when you defeat the formidable Frida Vargdottir. Here’s everything you need to know about how to complete this mission and beat the mighty warrior woman.

The Woodcarver’s Chisel Mission Walkthrough

The Woodcutter’s Chisel is an Oathsworn-level mission, meaning your units should all have reached at least Oathsworn rank to succeed. You may want to use that as a focus for your unit choices, as we have above, or you could strategize with ranged and distance fighters who could be better suited to fighting off Frida.

Frida’s moves are large, heavy swings in a three-tile area around her, and crashing blows to nearby units. She also performs an L-shaped move, crashing into anyone in her path, and dealing a mighty hit to the final person in line.

With this in mind, you might want to choose to have a mix of your strongest units, such as Gunnar, Arn, and Sigrid, but also add a Hersir and a Bogmathr to ensure you can deal damage from a distance.

  • Heir (Gunnar) is devoted to Odin, giving him increased Reflex. This allows him a greater chance to avoid being hit. He also has his base ability Strength And Aggression, which deals a heavy +3 Damage and inflicts the Vulnerable status on the enemy for two turns. When an enemy is Vulnerable, they receive 50% more damage.
  • Huntress (Sigrid) is devoted to Skadi, giving her the ability to hit an enemy with Alert attack and apply Crippled, which means the enemy is unable to move, and their reflex is reduced to zero. With this, Frida won’t be able to move closer to any unit to deal damage, or miss an incoming attack.
  • Spear-Breaker (Arn) has a main ability named Hew, which deals 4 Damage and +1 Armor Break to units within a 3-tile area, plus deals +1 tile Knockback. Hitting Frida with this after she has been made Vulnerable by Gunnar’s attack, means dealing heavy damage to the enemy,
  • Hersir brings a long spear, with the ability to hit the enemy from a short distance. Their base ability is War Cry, which grants surrounding units Ferocity, buffing their Damage by 50%. At Oathsworn rank, the Hersir can use their passive ability Warden whenever Guard is active, and use Attack Of Opportunity every time an enemy attacks an allied unit in range.
  • Bogmathr is a marksman unit with a bow, similar to Sigrid, and also worships Skadi, so gains the same buffs. Having another ranged attack is essential for keeping units safe from Frida’s heavy blows. The Bogmathr’s Oathsworn ability, Far-Seeing, can add another 50% Critical Chance when attacking from Lay Low, and applies +3 Range.

With your units chosen, the rest of the battle depends on reacting to Frida’s moves and planning your next strategy. Utilize each unit’s abilities to keep Frida weakened and at a distance, maintaining the upper hand.

Before you get to Frida, however, the mission begins when your units land on the shore, looking forward to the feast that is supposed to come. As you walk along the path, you find boxes and barrels to loot. The path becomes a crossroad, with the left path taking you to the Runestone. Activate it before crossing the wooden bridge.

As you cross the bridge, you are confronted by a strange wooden carving of a voluptuous woman, and your units are surrounded by enemies. There is a brief cut scene where it becomes clear you have been tricked and now ambushed.

There are eight enemy units with low HP, and a leader with high HP (the specific number of health points depends on what game difficulty setting you set).

If you are finding the mission too hard, you can change the game difficulty level by opening the Menu and changing it in the Settings.

Focus your strongest units on the leader, and use your weaker or ranged units to take out the others. This battle doesn’t take too long, and as long as you keep your units using their abilities wisely, you should come out of it relatively unscathed.

The units all go on Alert, meaning you will have to take care not to cross into their line of sight or risk being harmed by an Attack Of Opportunity. Hold your ground, use Guardian and Guard when you can, and utilize the ranged ability of your archers and Hersir until their Alert phase ends.

Use their tactic against them, setting your own units to Alert, and dealing passive damage whenever an enemy breaks into your line of sight. Just as you think you are about to finish them all off, two enemy units are called as reinforcements, but thankfully, their HP isn’t as high as the leader’s.

Once everyone is taken care of, another cut scene occurs where you meet Olaf, your soon-to-be new Woodsman.

He thanks you for defeating the people who captured him and the woman who kept him prisoner, Frida. Except, Frida hadn’t turned up… Until now.

Your final act is to defeat Frida, using as many attacks as possible to stop her moving closer to your units. Apply Crippled, Dazed, and Knockback when you can, followed by critical hits and your highest hit point attacks. Her health is very high, so you will have to keep maneuvering and striking from a distance, or striking up close when she is inflicted with debuffs.

There is no way to tell when she will perform each move, as it is random, so use bandages or team support abilities where you can.

As long as you looted every barrel, box, and corpse, when you finish the mission, you will receive Riches, Wadmal, Provisions, Oil, Wood, Frida’s Club, Knucklebone Dice, and unlocked the Runeworn Mail blueprint.
