Over the course of 70+ hours, players will come across an eclectic cast of characters. And while certain iconic characters won’t be playable in Rebirth, we still have the majority of the OG FF7 cast to mess around with. Like the original game, you can choose to have 3 active party members with the rest on standby. Furthermore, there are a total of 7 playable characters and some of them will require you to progress through the game before unlocking them.

If you ever feel like swapping someone out, you might be confused when looking at the menus. It may make sense to check the party tab in the menus to change up the party comp. However, when I tried this, I spent 10 minutes staring at the same screen mashing buttons on my controller hoping one of them would allow me to swap members.

To change party members in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, you need to open the menu and navigate over to the “Combat Settings.” Combat settings is the true party menu, and by pressing “Square,” you’ll be able to edit your current party.

Inside the combat settings menu, there are 3 different party loadouts, allowing you to have different team setups at the push of a button. What makes Final Fantasy VII Rebirth unique from Remake is the ability to set a party leader at all times. The party leader only applies in combat, so no luck for those Cloud haters thinking they could avoid his spiky hair in the overworld.

Players can change the leader at any time from the “Combat Settings” menu, right around where you change your party composition. Hover over a character in your active party you want to have as leader and press “Triangle.”

Each character has gameplay unique to them and their weapons, so don’t be afraid to test out different party leaders and teams. You might be someone who enjoyed The Lion King world in Kingdom Hearts and will really like the way Red XIII plays. Or perhaps you feel a bit more drawn to the backline, so playing as Aerith throwing magic at enemies while your companions fight up close is better. Now if only we knew what progress gets carried over from the FF7 Rebirth demo.
