Umamusume: Pretty Derby requires you to invest a lot to bring out the racers to their full potential. Going for debuff builds is a great idea, especially if you are a beginner. You can play dirty and affect other racers’ performance to come out on top.
To get the best debuffer build, you will be focusing on acquiring as many debuff skills as you can. Some characters like Nice Nature, Symboli Rudolf, and Curren Chan are excellent debuffers. They make up for any deficiency in stats that you may have at the beginning, and secure some big wins early.

Nice Nature is a natural debuffer, considering she has a huge number of debuffing skills in her base kit. You will be able to learn these even if you are short on support cards to gain more skills. By acquiring Hesitant Late Surgers, you will take care of racers running alongside her. Murmur can impact racers who are rushing ahead.
She is a late surger, so you want to focus on debuffing the front-runners and pace chasers as much as you can, especially at the start. You can gain Subdued Front Runners and Subdued Pace Chasers, so they get tired early in the race. To finish everyone off, you can use Disorient so they have trouble chasing you to the end.
You need to be careful not to make them too slow near the end of the race as a Late Surger, as you may get stuck in traffic when you begin your spurt. They may end up slowing you down as well.
There are going to be several long races, so you can also use Smoke Screen to disturb the vision of racers ahead of you. Nice Nature can startle everyone with Sharp Gaze, so skills such as Frenzied Pace Chasers and Frenzied Front Runners will also help in making them run out of energy near the end.

To build any debuffer, you first need to look at their base skills and consider their positioning and the time when that skill is activated. Timing is crucial; for example, End Closers barely lose stamina near the end of the race, so there is no point in making them frantic, and it may work against you. You will want to choose support cards which can help you acquire the most skills.

Symboli Rudolf is the dominator of the race track, so she possesses some skills which can be utilized to subdue everyone else around her. Tether helps you decrease the speed of the runners in front of her. Subdued Late Surgers prevent runners in that position from crossing the gap.
You need to acquire skills to slow down Front Runners and Late Surgers for Symboli Rudolf’s debuff build. Make the front-runners reluctant by acquiring Hesitant Front Runners. To reduce the speed of late Surgers during the final spurt, you can use Hesitant Late Surgers.
When Rudolf comes up front, you can use Disorient to affect the performance of other runners behind. The Illusionist and Smoke Screen are similar skills, but they affect runners ahead and work in long races.
You will also want more fatigue for fellow pace chasers running alongside Symboli Rudolf. So, acquire Subdued Pace Chaser to make them lose stamina during the early part of the race.

Curren Chan is a cute racer, but don’t let that fool you, as she can easily make other racers frantic around her. Using her base Intimidate skill, she can inflict the rushed effect on other racers during the early part of the race. Her other skill, Disorient, affects their vision near the end of the race, crushing any hopes for them to win.
By panicking, they will waste their stamina, not having enough by the end, which is crucial to winning Sprint races.
To follow up Intimidate, you can use Frenzied Late Surgers and Frenzied End Closers to make them waste even more stamina. You can also use Frenzied Pace Chasers to cause more chaos if you are playing her as a Front Runner.
Ideally, in her preferred pace-chasing position, you will need to slow down front-runners and pace chasers. Pace Chasers often gain speed near the end, so use Hesitant Pace Chasers, and for Front Runners, use Flustered Front Runners.
If you have enough skill points to acquire more skills, focus on Subdued Front Runners and Pace Chasers to further affect them in the early part of the race.
