How To Defeat Signis and Gron In Hollow Knight: Silksong

The Deep Docks of Hollow Knight: Silksong are no stranger to incredible boss fights, and we must admit that with Signis & Gron, this area is three-for-three. This perfect blend of reinforcements and staggered dance of multiple bosses is a dance amid flames that is a perfect finale for the area.

Unfortunately, half the battle of this fight is finding it in the first place. You will have to sacrifice a rare item to have the opportunity to walk the path toward them, but the tradeoff will be the ability to progress into a whole new and exciting area altogether. We think it’s worth the price.

How To Find Signis & Gron

There are three things you should acquire before seeking out Signis & Gron:

  • The Magma Bell: Purchased from the Forge Daughter
  • Clawline: Acquired in the Underworks
  • Simple Key

While the first option is preferable, the Simple Key is an absolute must to open the door to the lower Deep Docks region. This door is located under the Forge Daughter, east of the Deep Docks main bench.

By the time you can open this door with Clawline, you will likely find the Simple Key in the Songclave merchant’s stock or on the east bench of the Sands of Karak.

Hornet uses Clawline to open a door into the deeper depths of the Deep Docks in Hollow Knight: Silksong.

Once the door is open, you must navigate all the way through this lower area until you reach the Far Fields connection. Under that connection in the bottom right corner of the room, there is a ring you can use Clawline on to open a secret door to an even lower area.

Continue following the path to the west until you find a tall room with a cooling lava floor and a bucket of cooling flintstone. Before we go any further, climb up to open a shortcut back to the Deep Docks bench.

You will encounter Gron briefly before the bridge that leads to the shortcut room. You can mostly ignore him on this journey, trying your best to not get hit as you cross the room.

Hornet looks at her map besides a bucket of Flintstone outside Signis and Gron's boss room in Hollow Knight: Silksong.

Once the shortcut is open, and you have taken all the precautions you need to (like equipping your Magma Bell) you can progress further west of the flintstone bucket. In this room, Signis can be found with a number of other lesser enemies.

For now, your fight will be against Signis and Signis alone…

How To Defeat Forebrothers Signis & Gron

When your fight against Signis begins, the reinforcements in the room will scatter for now. However, as you progress into the fight, the Smokerock Sifters and Flintstone Fliers will return to the battlefield.

In the meantime, the most important thing to keep a handle on is the appearance of two lava falls on either side of the arena. Without the Magma Bell active, these pillars will deal two masks of damage to yourself. However, these pillars can also immediately kill the reinforcements and deflect Gron’s spear throws.

Hornet jumps over an attack from Signis and narrowly avoids his reinforcements in Hollow Knight: Silksong.

Your first task during this fight is learning Signis’s moveset. The best one to know is his Twinflint Toss, giving you ample opportunity to either hit him or heal midair.

Any reinforcements present later can be dealt with via traps or pushed into the lava falls. You should defeat them first before refocusing on Signis to prevent becoming overwhelmed (especially Flintstone Fliers).

Hornet takes significant damage from Signis during their fight in Hollow Knight: Silksong.

The second task is learning where to heal and how to balance damage. The best part about the Magma Bell is that it also reduces the damage dealt by Signis and Gron’s weapons (so long as you do not get hit too often).

If you do take damage, it is best to jump high into the air where most foes cannot reach you. This is a risk while reinforcements are in play, so bait them onto one side and rush to the other to create your opening.

Hornet dashes forward to defeat Signis during her fight with the Forebrothers in Hollow Knight: Silksong.

Once Signis has been staggered twice, he will call for Gron’s aid; this will make the fight a 2v1 boss battle. Thankfully, the only new thing to learn here is Gron’s moveset.

He is a straightforward kind of guy, using a lot of jump attacks with huge, noticeable cues. Most of his attacks can be avoided by dashing out of the way.

The reason this fight becomes difficult is in managing the two projectiles this duo can produce:

  • Gron can follow your vertical axis.
  • Signis threatens your horizontal axis.

The trick to overcoming this is by being mindful of where you were positioned when Signis jumped into the air. This will tell you where the spear will fly, giving you some time to roadmap your defense.

Gron descends on Hornet with a spear plunge attack as she uses a special venomous tool in Hollow Knight: Silksong.

Focus your attacks on Signis, and you can defeat him quickly to move this fight into its third and final stage. There are no new moves from Gron here: only a new stage mechanic.

As the fight progresses, lava will now begin to intermittently descend in the center of the arena. This threat can be easily ignored by:

  • Sticking in one section of the arena to bully Gron personally.
  • Using an angled diagonal jump to avoid Gron’s Spear Plunges instead of dash.

Gron’s spear throws can be rendered null and void if they are hit by the central lava fall.

Hornet stands victorious over the Forebrothers Signis & Gron as lava falls from the ceiling in Hollow Knight: Silksong.

Keep at it with Gron, and the fight will end swiftly. There are no immediate rewards for besting them, per se, but you will gain access to:

  1. Another bench near a shortcut door you can unlock back to Deep Docks main.
  2. A path leading to a Memory Locket.
  3. A path leading to the Diving Bell which can be used for a special quest later involving Act Three.
