How to Get Gas in Project Zomboid

Players can siphon gas in Project Zomboid by interacting with vehicles or fuel pumps while having the correct items in your inventory. Containers like gas cans, jerry cans, and water bottles can all hold gasoline, and to fill them up, all you need to do is right-click a car or fuel pump, then select the Siphon Gas option, though you can only do this if you have some sort of hose in your inventory as well. There’s more to getting gas in Project Zomboid though, so here’s a guide to help you figure things out.

One of the most efficient items to use for collecting gasoline is the humble gas can, which you can usually find inside residential and commercial garages, storage sheds, and car trunks. They’re somewhat rare, but since there are plenty of these locations in each of Project Zomboid’s towns, you’ll eventually find one if you keep looking.

Alternatively, you can use an empty water bottle instead. These are much easier to find, as they’re usually found inside cupboards and refrigerators. However, plastic bottles can only hold up to 1L of fluids, compared to the 10L limit on gas cans. Of course, you can compensate for this by simply bringing 10 water bottles, but using a gas can is far more convenient.

You can find 20L jerry cans by checking the trunks of army vehicles around the checkpoint near Louisville.

How to Siphon Gas

Simply right-click on any vehicle in the world, then select the Siphon Gasoline option. Here, you’ll get to pick which container your character will fill with gas. Of course, this will only work if the vehicle you’re interacting with has gas at all — to check if a car has any fuel in it, interact with its hood or open the Vehicle Mechanics screen from inside the car itself. You will also need a hose to siphon gas from a car.

Where to Find Hoses in Project Zomboid

Like gas cans, you’ll have more luck finding hoses inside sheds, garages, and other places where you can reasonably expect to find small tools and utilities, such as hardware stores and toolboxes. You won’t be able to siphon gas in Project Zomboid without a hose of sorts, so make sure you have one of these as well as a suitable gas container before you go and look for cars outside.

How to Get Fuel From Gas Stations

Not every car will have gas that you can siphon, and during the early stages of a playthrough, your best bet at getting any fuel for your vehicles and generators is to visit gas stations. At this point in the game, power and other essential services should still be working throughout the county, so you should still be able to get gas from station pumps, assuming that they actually have any gas in them.

Once the electricity shuts down, you can place a generator inside a gas stations’ premises to power the pumps. Also, you can refill your cars directly from a gas pump. Do this by pressing and holding the V key, then choosing the Refuel from Gas Pump option.

Can’t find keys to a car? Check dashboard glove compartments, nearby homes, or the pockets of zombies for some keys. Alternatively, you can hotwire vehicles in Project Zomboid by learning the right skills or starting with the Burglar Occupation.
