For those brave enough to challenge the world of Ivalice in Final Fantasy Tactics, mastering the art of combat is just the beginning. While your roster of human units grows through story progression and side quests, the battlefield is also teeming with formidable monsters and enemy units that can be recruited to fight alongside you.
Through the indispensable skills Invite and Tame, taught by the Orator job, you’ll learn how to persuade your foes to become your allies, adding powerful and versatile creatures to your party. So whether you’re looking for an easy way to turn the tides of a tricky battle or wish to expand your roster, an Orator is the answer.
How To Recruit Enemies
There are two ways to recruit enemies in Final Fantasy Tactics, and both require the use of the Orator Job.
-
The first is the Invite skill, which can be learned for 100 JP. This is a Speechcraft skill (so it has medium range) and will inflict the ‘Traitor’ status on the target if successful. This will mean that the enemy will be functionally charmed for the rest of the battle, and you’ll be offered the chance to recruit them permanently at the end.
- Note that this does mean that they will be uncontrollable for the rest of the battle, and enemies will now target them.
- The second is the Tame skill. This is a Support skill which will automatically inflict the Traitor status onto any monster unit that the unit gets into critically low health with a normal attack. This will only work on monsters, not human enemies.
It is important to know that if you are using Speechcraft as a secondary ability, rather than with an Orator, you will need to have the Beast Tongue Support ability equipped to use any Speechcraft abilities (including Invite) on monster units. This effectively means that if you aren’t using a Orator, you’ll need to decide between Invite and Tame when recruiting monsters.
Recruitment Tips
The success chance of the Invite skill is naturally very low. This means you’ll want to be quite strategic about how and when you use it.
- Make sure that your intended target/s are the last ones standing at the end of a battle, giving you the chance to more safely spam the Invite skill at them without risking other enemies killing mine.
- The higher your Magic stat, the better your Invite chances. Giving your inviter equipment that boosts their Magic will help reduce the chance of failure. You might also consider using Ramza’s Shout ability to raise the inviter’s Magic stat temporarily (this ability is only available to Ramza’s Squire Job in Chapter 4 of the game).
- As an alternative to the previous point, consider also raising your inviter’s Speed – this will give them more turns, and therefore more attempts.
- When on an invitation mission, make sure you deal with enemies that can inflict the Berserk or Confusion status ailments as soon as possible.
