How to Win as a Civilian in Halloween: The Game (Civilian Tips)

Playing as the Civilians in Halloween: The Game is definitely a challenge, as you will be facing off against the infamous Michael Myers in your quest to get as many Residents to safety as possible. Here is a rundown of some of the best tips and tricks for getting a victory as a Civilian in Halloween: The Game.

Prioritize Hiding & Protecting Your Special Targets

Right from the get-go, the first thing you are going to want to do as a Civilian is focus on your Special Targets. These Residents offer the most points for Michael, and so preventing them from being killed and getting them to Escape is your best chance at winning. The best strategy for keeping your Special Targets alive is making them hide, which you can do after the very first conversational mini-game.

However, though hiding your Special Targets early is a good approach, try to be smart with where you hide them. Be sure to avoid having them hide in houses, since they are fairly easy to find. Instead, have them follow you for a bit and then get them to hide outdoors in obscure places when Michael is not around. From here, you can then set up Escapes and also find other lower-priority Residents, which are more expendable and thus can be used to call the Police and more.

Arm Yourself & Residents Early

Civilians and Residents are defenseless unless they get their hands on key items. Weapons are going to be the standout here, since they are the only way to actually deal damage and down Michael. Focus on getting yourself a weapon right from the get-go, but also give your Residents weapons so that they can help out too.

This does not only apply to weapons, though, as key items are also a must for combating Michael. While Escape items are a must-grab, you should also focus on other items that provide unique benefits. Here’s a rundown of the best weapons and items to kit your loadout with:

  • Best Melee Weapons: Wood Axe, Pickaxe, and Sledgehammer.
  • Best Ranged Weapons: All firearms, Hatchet, Pitchfork, and Cleaver.
  • Best Items: Ancient Amulet/Ice Pick/Pocket Knife to combat grabs, Flashlight/Firecrackers for blinding Michael, and First Aid Kit/Healing Spray for healing.
  • Niche Items: Beer when paired with Bob for a melee damage boost, Flare Gun for alerting the Police and blinding Michael, and the Brass Lantern for revealing Michael in his Shape Jump form.

Use Starting Items to Your Advantage

Starting Items are by far the biggest way to get an advantage against Michael. You unlock Starting Items by leveling up different Civilians, and by doing so, you can get hold of items that can free you from Michael’s grasp, alert the Police, and more. Here are the best Starting Items:

  • Health Spray or First Aid Kit: Both are good for healing.
  • Pocket Knife: Can be used to free yourself from Michael’s grab.
  • Flare Gun: Can be used to alert the Police right away.
  • Beer: Specifically works well when paired with Bob.
  • Repair Kit: Works well with either Marcus or Annie.

Keep Your Eyes on Michael & Do Not Get Too Close

Next up are two tips rolled into one. Michael’s biggest crutch is his Shape Jump ability, but since he can only enter it by default when in the dark and unobserved, it’s generally best to keep your eyes on him and make use of lights when possible. If Michael is pursuing you, or you see him out in the distance, keep eye contact with him. This way, he cannot shift into Shape Jump unless he uses his Reality Tear ability.

Likewise, Michael’s biggest weakness is his base movement speed, but should he close the distance, it’s often the end for any Resident or Civilian in his path. With this being the case, it is imperative not to get too close. Flee if you see him, keep your Residents away from him, and if you see Michael approaching while you are indoors, lock doors behind you to either keep him in or out. This also applies to when you knock Michael down, as getting too close can allow him to execute you if you are not able to arrest him.

Prioritize Certain Escapes Over Others

While there are multiple Escapes in Halloween, certain Escapes are much easier to set up than others. Here’s a rundown of the Escapes you should focus on, and the ones you may be better off avoiding:

  • Storm Cellar Escape: This one is the easiest to set up, since it requires fairly few items. In the best case, you often only need a Bolt Cutter or Escape Key, cutting down on a lot of time by focusing first on the Storm Cellar.
  • Police Wagon: While this definitely takes the longest to set up, it is easy and does not require any specific items. All you need to do is increase the presence of Police in Haddonfield by calling the Police directly, using Flare Guns, and more. Once the Police encounter sufficient bodies or Michael directly, and the Police presence increases, the Police Wagon will be called.
  • Gate Escape: The Gate Escape is the hardest to set up since it requires the most mini-games and items, but if you happen to find a Fuse, then by all means go for it. The only other items you will need are Bolt Cutters or an Escape Key, though you may also potentially need to clear some boards with a weapon too.
  • Car & Police Car Escape: You are better off avoiding these two entirely. Both are easily countered by Michael’s Blackout Ability, and the Car Escape requires two mini-games and three items. While the Police Car only requires one item, Michael players are starting to avoid the Police entirely, thus reducing the drop rate for the Police Car Keys.

Group Up & Only Split Up When Necessary

In Halloween: The Game, Michael is more deadly when focusing on a single target, but is severely vulnerable to players who band together. During your games, make sure you always have at least one other player with you. This way, you can have someone watch your back when you are setting up Escapes, talking to Residents, and looting for items.

If you intend to take him down, never attempt to fight Michael alone. Banding together is a surefire way to overwhelm Michael. As a group, you can also help a Civilian or Resident grabbed by Michael by shoving or dealing damage to him. If you do need to split up, only ever do so when it is absolutely necessary. This way, Michael has a much harder time picking off Civilians and Residents since there will be more targets to deal with.

Customize & Upgrade Your Perk Deck

While most players may be ignoring it entirely, the Perk Deck for Civilians is a great way to get some much-needed buffs for both you and your Residents. You can customize your Perk Deck via your Civilian Loadout, where you can roll for new Perks with Perk Points, equip Perks, and then upgrade them to increase their effectiveness. You can then earn and apply these Perks in-game as you unlock them.

Do Not Escape Too Early

While escaping before any members of the Civilian Team are killed deducts a hefty amount of points from Michael, doing so too early is a surefire way to lose. As a Civilian, the best way to win is to get as many Residents out as you can beforehand, and by Escaping yourself, this is pretty hard to do.

As a Civilian, the best method to win is this: first, focus on getting the Special Targets to escape, since they offer the most points. Residents should then be your second priority since there are more of them. A few Resident deaths are not a huge loss here, so long as the Special Targets are out. Afterward, you can get yourselves out for even more points. This does not necessarily mean that Civilians are expendable, though, so if possible, try to keep Civilian deaths down to a minimum.
