Amado Sanzu is one of the most intriguing characters in the Boruto series. He is incredibly difficult to read, so much so that one day he’s acting like a grieving father, and the next day he’s a manipulative scientist who’s always two steps ahead of the game. Even Shikamaru finds it hard to figure him out, even after he reveals his personal agenda. That said, many fans are wondering whether Amado is just a father who lost his child or a master manipulator.
As the plot unfolds in the Boruto manga, the uncertainty surrounding Amado’s character increases each chapter, resulting in fans debating about his true nature. To this day, in Two Blue Vortex, he remains an enigma not just to Kawaki but to the rest in Konoha. No one really knows what’s going on inside his head, as he has been consistent in withholding critical information since day one.

The Pain and Grief Behind Amado’s Attempt to Resurrect Akebi
Amado Sanzu was once the head of research and development within the Kara organization. For a long time, he was in partnership with Isshiki Otsutsuki, agreeing to fulfill all of Kara’s wishes with his scientific knowledge and research. In fact, he was responsible for remodeling all the bodies of Kara’s members, integrating scientific ninja tools, and implanting them with Shibai Otsutsuki’s cells without fail.
However, before Amado agreed to help Isshiki, he was just a genius scientist who found satisfaction in all of his work. His life changed drastically when his only daughter, Akebi, contracted a fatal illness no physician could cure. Armed with science, he took matters into his own hands, in the hopes that his daughter would one day recover. He exhausted all of his resources until he resorted to cloning, disregarding his morals and ethics.
“In the unlikely event Akebi truly happens to resurrect as an Otsutsuki, fine, you can do as you please, though I’ll fight you with everything I’ve got”—Amado Sanzu to Kawaki
When Akebi died, Amado went to work as fast as he could to create a clone for his deceased daughter. He preserved Akebi’s brain, digitized it and extracted it to make sure her memories remain intact. Yet still, his efforts did not amount to anything, as the clones were all imperfect. Sure, they had Akebi’s face, voice, and memories, but she was still a total stranger. That’s when Amado decided to join Kara, desperately hoping that the powers of the Otsutsuki could make the impossible possible.

Using Science, Knowledge, and Information as Weapons
Even after Boruto Part 1 ended, and Part 2 continued, Amado stayed neutral, meaning his loyalty remained only for himself. He’s the kind of person who simply makes the best choices available for his personal convenience. Even when he sought asylum in Konoha after defecting from Kara, his personal agenda fueled all his actions.
Amado may offer help and reveal vital information, but he always withholds the most critical ones to ensure his safety. In other words, Amado only reveals parts of the truth that may benefit him. This makes him dangerous and full of uncertainty, as he’s always two steps ahead of the game.
“Memories are merely vague figments of thoughts; as a scientist, there is no proof stronger than physical evidence”—Amado Sanzu
Of all the characters in Boruto, Amado may truly be one of the most intelligent, as he can control and manipulate stronger characters despite lacking any combat abilities. For instance, he secretly installed an emergency shutdown code on all the bodies he remodeled, including Delta and Kawaki. In addition, he even reconstructed Kawaki’s karma without consent for his own benefit.
Is Amado More of a Grieving Father or a Manipulative Scientist?
The Answer May Be Both
So far, the answer to this question may be both. Amado may be a grieving father to Akebi but also a master manipulator at the same time. His grief and loss of his daughter are real, going to extreme lengths to ensure her resurrection, but the methods and strategies he uses to accomplish this goal raise so many questions. Not only does Amado use different people, but he also has no regard for their well-being at all.
“What matters to me is the Karma for my daughter”—Amado Sanzu
For now, Amado and his true intentions for Akebi and the Otsutsuki Clan remain a mystery for fans to figure out. Even the people of Konoha remain unsure of whether to give their trust to the grieving father who seems to be saving them or fear the manipulative scientist who always had a trump card up his sleeve. One thing is clear in Boruto: Amado is not yet done until every piece of his plan falls into place.
