Is Twisted Metal About To Get A Revival On PlayStation?

Time to light’em up, boys!

When PlayStation first came out, one of the biggest things that Sony tried to do was not just establish itself as the “dominant hardware system” via its graphics but give itself plenty of software titles that gamers could lash on to. That’s why iconic characters like Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, and more were born. They became the “mascots” for that first generation of PlayStation, but they weren’t alone. The first Twisted Metal game came out in 1995, and it helped spark a new vehicle combat game that gamers couldn’t get enough of. For a while, it was something that Sony kept alive because it kept selling. Then, the franchise ceased to be after the PS3 title in 2012.

However! There is hope on the horizon! Over on Twitter, one of the writers over at VGC, Jordan Middler, was asked about something featuring Twisted Metal, and this was his reply:

Typically, that wouldn’t be enough to get excited about. However, as fans have pointed out, one of the companies Sony has purchased under the PlayStation banner, Firesprite, has job listings for a “vehicular combat” title for the PS5. That would seem to imply that something is happening with this franchise.

But wait! There’s another angle to look at here. Specifically, we’re talking about the live-action adaptation of the franchise that debuted last year on Peacock. The show was one of the streamers’ biggest hits, and it was confirmed at The Game Awards by one of its stars, Anthony Mackie, that Season 2 was greenlit.

As such, and not unlike other video game adaptations that do well, it’d be foolish for Sony and PlayStation not to try something and bring this franchise back to life. If the journalist from the tweet above is any indication, that could mean that we get an announcement soon.

Yet, that’s where an interesting twist comes about. You might recall a piece of news that stated PlayStation wouldn’t have any 1st party existing franchises showing up on PS5 until the first quarter of the 2025 fiscal year. That means that even IF this game is being made and it’s announced, it likely won’t be coming out until 2025 at the earliest.

Still, that would give fans something to hope for, and that’ll be enough for some. Plus, when you think about the PS5’s graphics, processing power, and the games it’s been able to render over the last few years, one can easily imagine how beautiful and visceral a new Twisted Metal game could be on the platform.
