It has only been a couple of weeks since Jagex announced RuneScape Reignited but the company is already changing up its plans. The studio has announced in a new update that it has decided to cancel the project following fan feedback.
The idea behind RuneScape Reignited was to bring a new player experience that would work well for brand-new players and lapsed players returning after many years away from the game. Reignited players would get a separate subscription, separate servers and their own fresh characters, with no porting allowed between standard RuneScape and Reignited.
Fans of RuneScape quickly pointed out some of the drawbacks to this plan, such as splintering the player base and eliminating interaction with veteran players. After mulling over some of its ideas for the project a bit more, Jagex ultimately decided that Reignited would be a bad idea and has now scrapped it entirely.
In a blog post, the company said: “it is clear that we missed the mark on this, and so we are not moving forward with it. Our goal is to see Runescape grow again, with returning players coming back and new players joining, but never at the expense of our existing community”.
While Reignited will no longer be happening, Jagex is still moving ahead with the rest of its packed 2027 roadmap, which includes a ton of content updates to the main game, including new bosses, raids, a new zone, new quests and more. In December, Jagex will also offer a 10-day free access period, allowing anyone to jump back into Runescape for a limited time without paying.
KitGuru Says: It is always surprising to see a game cancelled so soon after release. Did you think Reignited would have been good, or do you think scrapping it to focus on the main game was the right move?
