Jak and Daxter film gets first update in years

Since as far back as 2022, we first started hearing about the potential for a Jak and Daxter film, with Ruben Fleischer – the director of Sony’s Uncharted movie – revealing at the time that he was in talks with Sony to head such a project. While nothing official has been confirmed in the years since, insiders have now claimed that the film is still going ahead, with Fleischer remaining committed to the project.

Taking to Twitter, known film leaker DanielRPK offered a surprising-yet-welcome update regarding the long-awaited Jak and Daxter film, claiming that “Minecraft writers Gavin James and Neil Widener are writing Sony’s Jak and Daxter movie, with Ruben Fleischer still attached to direct.”

Given Sony’s history with film adaptations of its games, it is a pleasant surprise to see that Ruben Fleischer is still committed to the project almost 5 years on from its initial inception – especially since the aforementioned Uncharted film went through a total of 6 different directors over the course of its troubled development.

The announcement of Gavin James and Neil Widener as the film’s writers is interesting given their relative lack of experience outside of the aforementioned Minecraft Movie. That said, the humour presented in the film (while somewhat odd for Minecraft) could work well in the world of Jak and Daxter.

All that being said, here’s to hoping that this means Sony is also working on a revival of the Jak and Daxter franchise when it comes to gaming as well. We will have to wait and see, but this latest update does give some hope to the notion.
