Jujutsu Kaisen Creator Gege Is Killing Off The New Strongest Sorcerer

Different eras of Jujutsu Kaisen have had different strongest sorcerers, and Gege Akutami has thus created various legends spanning across different eras. In the Heian era, Sukuna stood as the strongest, and his immense power was such that he transcended time itself, reincarnating in the modern era, which had already seen Gojo Satoru stand tall as the strongest sorcerer.

However, now, in the modern era, set 68 years after the conclusion of the Shinjuku Showdown, Gege Akutami has officially confirmed to us a completely new strongest in the form of Yuji Itadori, the former protagonist of the series. While Yuji stands as the new strongest in the modern era and has officially obtained the position of a Special Grade Sorcerer, he is now incredibly close to being killed off, which is a sad turn of events in the story.

When Jujutsu Kaisen: Modulo began, it was unclear as to whether Yuji Itadori was still alive or not. However, at the end of the first volume, Gege finally teased the return of the former protagonist of the series. In the final volume of Jujutsu Kaisen: Modulo, which was released on May 1, 2026, and went on to make record sales in Japan, Yuji Itadori finally returned. Modulo Chapter 19, which was released in Weekly Shonen Jump Issue 9 of 2026, saw Yuji Itadori unleash his Blood Manipulation.

Immediately upon his return, he also went on to showcase the ability to hit a mastered Black Flash at will, making him a sorcerer on a completely different scale. His true strength was shown briefly in the subsequent Chapter 20, when he took on the vast majority of the Cursed Spirits trying to escape from Tokyo. Yuji disposed of them with a single Dismantle so powerful that it was easily greater than any other slash fired by the King of Curses, Ryomen Sukuna.

“What’s all this? You completely failed to gather them up. Well, can’t help it. They’re still new to this. Dismantle!!” — Yuji unleashes a massive Dismantle, Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Chapter #20

At this point, Yuji was already above the level of the average Special Grade Sorcerer in the eyes of the fans. What further solidified his status at the top was the author note from Gege Akutami in Modulo Volume 3, which confirmed Yuji as an official Special Grade, as well as Earth’s strongest sorcerer. With Yuji now confirmed as the strongest sorcerer, fans hoped to see more of him leading from the front, but it appears that Gege Akutami is choosing to do the exact opposite. In other words, Gege has already set the end of his protagonist after 3 centuries.

Why Yuji Itadori Will Reach Unprecedented Heights Before Dying

In Jujutsu Kaisen: Modulo Chapter 22, which was officially released on February 16, 2026, in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump issue 12, Yuji Itadori confirmed to Maru that he is going to live for 300 more years. In other words, Yuji’s lifespan is almost 400 years, and that truly makes him a unique sorcerer. It also goes to show that Yuji Itadori is still in his prime despite being in his 80s, and that he will continue to be in his prime for over a century longer. This gives Yuji immense time to gain even further strength and enhance his control over sorcery even further.

“I’m going to live for another 300 or so years. I will handle whatever follows. And if necessary, I’ll bear the consequences of this great sin.” — Yuji reveals his lifespan, Jujutsu Kaisen: Modulo Chapter #22

Yuji Itadori is already stronger than Gojo Satoru and Ryomen Sukuna, but if, in the eyes of some, he failed to reach this level, the fact that he still has over 100 years to train and get stronger while maintaining his prime levels of strength goes to show that he will inevitably become the strongest in the entire history of planet Earth. However, just like all others, he will eventually have to fall. Yuji Itadori is not immortal, and he has already set his death date in the series. In fact, in JJK Modulo Chapter 25, which was officially released on March 9, 2026, in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump issue 15, Gege Akutami confirmed Yuji’s plans for Japan after his own death.

“The last part is pretty bothersome. I’m gonna become a cursed object when I finally die. As you know, the aliens arrived. We don’t know what will become of the Earth later on. If people need cursed energy once again in the future, someone just has to eat me, as a cursed object!” — Yuji reveals his plan after his death, Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Chapter #25

In other words, Yuji himself is preparing for an era without him and is setting up a plan to save Japan in his absence. In the next era of Jujutsu Kaisen, which is likely going to be set at least 300 years after the current one, Yuji Itadori will have already died, and the strongest sorcerer on Earth will be no more. In an era without Cursed Energy, there will be no more sorcery, meaning Yuji is the last strongest sorcerer in the entire world of Jujutsu Kaisen.

With the confirmed death of Yuji Itadori in 300 years, sorcery will have shifted dramatically in Japan. There is not going to be any other sorcerer around, but Heavenly Restriction users will still exist. These Heavenly Restriction users will be equipped with powerful mass-produced Cursed Tools, which themselves could hold access to unique techniques. As such, a new era will have been ushered in where techniques are primarily utilized through weapons. But, Yuji Itadori’s influence could still exist, and he may even have a successor.

“As for the people with a Heavenly Restriction from here on out, we’ll have to track them down, and we’ll thoroughly keep tabs on their family line. We’ll also need to preserve the cursed tools we have and mass-produce them.” — Yuji explains the future with Heavenly Restriction users, Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Chapter #25

This is because, in Modulo Chapter 25, Yuji Itadori himself confirmed that he is going to be turned into a Cursed Object upon death. Then, if Earth ever needs his help, someone can simply consume the cursed object, and he will be reincarnated inside the vessel. This vessel is the next successor of Yuji Itadori and will likely be shown in the series 300 years later.

Of course, Jujutsu Kaisen: Modulo’s ending was very open, and as such, if Gege Akutami wants, he can essentially return to the franchise anytime he wants. Gege knows that this franchise holds tremendous potential still and that he can still write brilliant stories in this ever-expansive world. That said, we know nothing of his return as of yet. There are multiple reports in Japan that suggest Gege Akutami is already returning to writing manga, but it is unclear if this return is with Jujutsu Kaisen or a completely different series.

In any case, Gege Akutami has decided upon Yuji’s eventual death and him being succeeded by a completely new individual who could potentially go on to become Yuji’s vessel. We hope to see this storyline being realized at some point later down the line, but for now, Modulo is all we have.

All the chapters of Jujutsu Kaisen and Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo by Gege Akutami, published in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump, are available to read via Manga Plus and Viz Media.
