Lego is releasing a Game Boy set next month, but it looks like Nintendo’s old rival Sega might be about to beat it to the punch. Images of a Sega Genesis controller Lego set have leaked. The only problem is, it looks set to be the latest example of a Lego set that you won’t be able to buy separately, no matter how much you’re willing to pay for it.
The grainy image of the Lego Genesis controller has been doing the rounds on social media over the weekend, but Brick Built Blogs appears to have been one of the first to share it. The packaging for the controller set shows the faithful, albeit blocky controller sitting on a Lego plinth that it will presumably come with for display purposes.
It Looks Like Lego Is Turning The Genesis Controller Into Lego For One Of Its September Free Gifts
It’s a smaller set at 260 pieces, partly because it will be a gift with purchase. That means you will get the Lego controller for free should you meet certain requirements. That’s the good news. The bad news is, according to the same leaks, the threshold is spending $130 in a single purchase on other Lego sets, and that the set can’t be bought otherwise, no matter how much you might want it.
The Genesis controller will reportedly be a GWP starting from September 8, 2025, and these Lego offers tend to be extremely limited. You’ll likely have until the end of September, at best, to capitalize on the deal before the controller set then disappears forever. If so, that means you won’t be able to use your Lego Game Boy purchase to contribute to your $130 total. Although at $59.99, you’d need two of them and then a little something extra to get the Genesis set thrown in for free anyway.
The controller looks like it will be more or less the same size as a real Genesis controller, although the dimensions haven’t been revealed via the leak. It has a Lego d-pad and the controller’s A, B, and C buttons that can presumably be pressed if details about the upcoming Game Boy set are anything to go by. The white Sega Genesis logo is in the middle, and the connector at the top, where the wire would be attached to the real thing, is a nice touch.
If that Genesis logo doesn’t read Mega Drive in the UK, Lego and I are going to have a problem.
Having to spend money, and a lot of it, to get a set you want can be a little frustrating, but it happens a lot, particularly when it comes to video game sets. There’s a Mario Kart Blue Shell set that can only be bought with Lego points you’ve accrued, and there have now been two Fortnite sets that are presumably gone forever if you didn’t get them when they were given away with Fortnite’s bigger sets.
