Cyberpunk 2077 has been a massive success across multiple mediums, with the CD Projekt Red developed title selling 10s of millions of copies while also spawning the hit spin-off animated Netflix series Edgerunners. Expanding the IP further, CDPR announced earlier this month that a live-action Cyberpunk film is in the works. Though details remain light, the team have offered some early hints as to what can be expected from the project.
Following the announcement earlier this month that Paramount Pictures had signed a deal with CDPR to create a live-action film adaptation based on Cyberpunk 2077, we’ve now gotten our first official details on what this project will entail. Previously, all that was confirmed was the fact that Paramount would be in charge of the adaptation, with Lorenzo di Bonaventura serving as its producer.
Taking part in a recent interview with the Polish publication ‘PAP Biznes’ (and translated by GamesRadar), CD Projekt Red co-CEO Michał Nowakowski offered a slight tease as to what can be expected from the live-action film plot-wise, stating:
“At this point, we can only say that we definitely don’t want to make a film adaptation of the game. We want to tell a story in the world of Cyberpunk, but it won’t be a one-to-one translation of the game’s story.”
Among the game’s many successes, one of Cyberpunk 2077’s best aspects is its story, offering a cinematic and emotional narrative which could easily be translated into other mediums.
As we’ve seen with the aforementioned Cyberpunk Edgerunners however, the world of Night City itself is just as if not more interesting, leading to countless possibilities when it comes to telling stories within its world.
Thus, while it would be cool to see Keanu Reeves play a live-action version of Johnny Silverhand in a retelling of the game’s narrative, having its own unique story makes more sense – and would further add to the growing universe of Cyberpunk.
