Madame Web’s Cancelled Promo Items Reveal Planned MCU Connections

Summary

  • Problems throughout production plagued the Madame Web movie in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.
  • Rumors painted Madame Web as potentially part of the MCU, which proved untrue.
  • New images of canceled Madame Web promo items show the planned MCU connection was real.

Madame Web’s connections to the MCU have been revealed thanks to a new look at canceled promo items. Sony’s Spider-Man Universe of films was a mess from the start, as Morbius disappointed critically and financially, with Madame Web and Kraven continuing to do the same. Each movie was intended to be led by Spider-Man villains and characters adjacent to the superhero, though none featured the wall-crawler. Spider-Man has been able to thrive as part of the MCU thanks to a deal reached between studios that saw the character first appear in Captain America: Civil War before getting his own trilogy of movies.

Since Sony still had the rights to every Spider-Man character, they took it upon themselves to capitalize on the hero’s popularity, with Madame Web potentially being the most egregious outing. The movie was plagued with behind-the-scenes turmoil, producing a lackluster outing that featured awful plotting, a lack of action, and phoned-in performances. Many of the A-list cast, including Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney, even seemed to be duped into the production under the guise of being an MCU movie. However, that promise looks to have been true once upon a time.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day provides ample opportunity to feature a fresh start for Spider-Man, but that doesn’t mean there shouldn’t be familiar faces.

Thanks to a Reddit post, pictures of Madame Web’s planned theater popcorn buckets and drink cups featuring MCU tie-ins have made their way online. While the film had promotional theater items, they were vastly different from those pictured, which highlight the universe via Daily Bugle newspapers wrapped around the bucket. The papers are rife with references to the MCU, including Groot, Tony Stark, and Doctor Strange, with several references to other Spider-Man characters that weren’t in Madame Web, like Green Goblin and Doc Ock. Sony’s Spider-Man Universe Failed, But The Hero Will See A Brand New Day In The MCU

Madame Web was maligned by fans and even the cast upon release, marking a dark spot for the world of Spider-Man and ultimately dooming the Kraven movie to a similar fate. While initial rumors stated Tom Holland would appear as Spider-Man and other various whispers about the production’s plans, they (thankfully) never materialized. However, while Sony’s foray into Spider-Man foes soured their stake in the character, they hope to keep goodwill alive with the heroes’ next MCU outing.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set to bring back Tom Holland as the titular web-head, swinging his way into a title that strikes fear into comic fans due to the implications the story potentially holds. Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton is at the helm, continuing his tenure with Marvel. Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s most exciting update surrounds Stranger Things actress Sadie Sink, who joined the cast in an unannounced role. While Spider-Man will be back in the MCU, Madame Web is best left forgotten, with fans likely thankful that the movie holds no connective tissue to the larger franchise.
