Mario Kart’s Blue Shell Is Now A Lego Set, But You Need Points To Buy It

Summary

  • Lego has quietly added a Spiny Shell Mario Kart set to its site.
  • You can only buy it using Lego Insider points though, not money.
  • You will need to have at least 2,500 points if you want to buy the set.

Lego and Nintendo have been working together for half a decade, the recently released Mario Kart set one of their most ambitious collaborations to date. However, the set doesn’t come with the leaked free gift some were expecting. That’s available to buy separately, but you’ll need points, not money, if you want to buy it.

The set is a Mario Kart Spiny Shell, more commonly referred to as the dreaded Blue Shell, and it’s available right now through Lego’s website. You might struggle to find it, though – I only stumbled across it after scrolling far enough down the new Mario Kart set’s store page.

The Simpsons and Lego are together again for the first time in ten years.

For some reason, Lego is only selling the Spiny Shell set in exchange for points, and a lot of them. The set costs 2,500 points. Since you get 650 points for every $100 you spend at the Lego Store, that means you will have to have spent close to $400 to have earned that many points. You also accrue points for registering sets, and you may have been lucky enough to make some purchases during a double points event. Still, if you have enough points for the Spiny Shell set, you’ve probably spent a lot of money on Lego.

You also need to be signed up to the Lego Insider program. It’s free, and since the points can be exchanged for secret sets, I’d recommend signing up now if you’re not already.

A Blue Shell Has Hit The Lego Store

Start Saving Up Those Insider Points

The Lego recreation of Mario Kart’s infamous Blue Shell is 234 pieces and is a cool accessory for any of the Mario Kart sets you might already own. Either the smaller Mario Kart sets released earlier this year, or the 1,972-piece set released last week. It’s actually the perfect companion for the set released last week size-wise, which is why it’s a little odd that this isn’t being given away as a free gift.

You can still get a free gift with your Mario Kart set, provided you buy it within the next couple of days, but it isn’t Nintendo-themed. It’s a scaled-up Baby Astronaut that’s a gift with purchases of $150 or more. Since the new Mario Kart set is $169.99, the Baby Astronaut will be thrown in for free, but only until this Friday, May 23.

Mario Kart – Mario & Standard Kart

Mario Kart – Mario & Standard Kart

Lego’s Mario Kart set is 1,972 pieces, making it one of Nintendo’s biggest Lego sets to date. It turns Mario and his red, white, and blue standard kart into Lego, and it comes with a stand for display purposes. Both Mario and the kart are fully posable, so you can choose how to display the set.

It’s been a busy year for Lego already, and there are still some very big sets to come. The Lord of the Rings book nook, which is modeled after Gandalf’s battle with a Balrog, has now been officially revealed, and there’s still chatter of a $1,000 Death Star set being revealed and released before the end of 2025.
