Marvel Rivals has confirmed that customized color costumes will require a new currency that’s currently only available through microtransactions. When the April update patch notes were revealed, most players were excited about Marvel Rivals’ new skin customization feature, with many hoping it would be a free addition. After all, Marvel’s hero shooter has built a reputation for being more generous than its competitors.

Initially, most players assumed that Marvel Rivals’ alternate costume colors would be tied to the skins themselves. For example, someone who bought a legendary skin would also get access to its different color palettes. NetEase Games’ announcement did mention that players would need to visit the in-game store to use the feature, but some misunderstood this to mean they only had to pay for the skins, not the color variations.

In a follow-up tweet, NetEase clarified that Marvel Rivals’ new customization feature will require Unstable Molecules, a new currency. For now, Unstable Molecules have a 1:1 exchange rate with Lattice, the game’s primary microtransaction currency. The tweet also revealed the base price for new color palettes, with each skin variant costing 600 Unstable Molecules—equivalent to 600 Lattice or about $6 under the current rates.

Fans Think the New Costume Colors’ Pricing is Unfair

After NetEase’s tweet about Unstable Molecules, some fans voiced frustration, arguing that this monetization approach isn’t reasonable. They believe that once a player buys a costume, they should have access to all its alternate color schemes without paying extra. Others see no issue with the announcement, pointing out that Marvel Rivals offers plenty of free skins and that it’s acceptable for the developer to earn extra revenue through cosmetic items. There’s also a group of players who think locking the new feature behind a paywall is fine, but feel the pricing is unfair. They suggest that color schemes should be priced between 200 and 300 Lattice to make them more accessible to all players.

While the microtransaction aspect of the new feature has sparked much debate, NetEase’s tweet revealed additional details. For one, F2P players will have new ways to acquire Unstable Molecules starting in Marvel Rivals’ Season 3. Additionally, it’s been confirmed that the customized skins will impact Emotes, Intro Animations, and MVP. Even better, the developer plans to introduce more customizable skins with the launch of the next season. For now, players can purchase one of the four alternate color schemes for these skins: Psylocke’s Vengeance, Luna Snow’s Mirae 2099, Winter Soldier’s Blood Soldier, and Magik’s Punkchild.
