Mass Effect 3 Fan Vibecodes Their Own Multiplayer Mod

Despite some failures with the most recent Mass Effect Andromeda, the original Mass Effect games are still praised as one of the best sci-fi trilogies in gaming, with the release of the 2021 Legendary edition offering the definitive way to experience the series. Despite all its improvements, however, the most notable aspect missing from the experience was the removal of Mass Effect 3’s multiplayer mode.

While BioWare suggested they might revive the mode themselves at some point, in the 5-year wait since the remastered trilogy’s release, a fan has resorted to making their own version of the experience, albeit through some controversial methods.

Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer Is Unofficially Back

Released earlier today by NexusMods user PayDay1, the Mass Effect Legendary Edition Multiplayer project (LEMP for short) aims to recreate the original experience with all the same content ported over from the 2012 game, using the AI Claude in order to compile Mass Effect 3’s multiplayer scripts while swapping out some defunct mechanics like its microtransactions.

While plenty of fans have been praising the release for finally addressing the gameplay absence that BioWare has ignored for the better half a decade, others have expressed their disappointment that the project only exists because of generative AI, and noted that it will likely have several development limitations as a result.

With the project only having just been released, it’s hard to get a grasp on the full scope of how well the mod performs or how its future updates will go, although players have been reporting that it does indeed work for online play. Despite the functionality, the same players have also reported that it does have numerous bugs, with some surrounding ability and shot registration, as well as performance stutters.

We’re In A New Era Of Modding, For Better Or Worse

While the idea of Mass Effect 3’s multiplayer coming back sounds like a dream come true, the project comes as a drop in the water of the countless video game recompilations, mods, and even brand-new games that are being made with AI as an integral part of their development.

From porting over classic videos games in browser form to PC ports of games that fans have been waiting for decades to play, these “vibecoded” AI-driven projects are a bit of a double-edged sword at this point for players, offering fast development for some ambitious projects at the cost of not having the same personalized touch and reliable experience as a hand-made program.
