Nintendo Celebrates Mar10 Day With New Movie Announcement, Paper Mario Release Date, and More

Today Nintendo is celebrating Mar10 Day, also known as Mario Day, and the Kyoto-based company had a few juicy announcements to share about the Super Mario franchise.

First of all, Shigeru Miyamoto himself announced that a new Super Mario Bros. movie is in early development at Illumination.

We hear from the studio’s CEO Chris Meledandri that his team is currently working on the storyboards and animation will start soon. That being said, fans will have to wait for a long time, as the release date is April 3, 2026, in most territories with some getting it later the same month.

Yet, that’s not all we get today. We also learn that Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door will launch soon, specifically on May 23, 2024. If you’re unfamiliar with it, it’s a remake of the GameCuve classic released in 2004, and it’s coming just in time for the 20th anniversary of the original release.

The game was announced on the September 2023 Nintendo Direct, and it’s nice to see it’s now close to its release.

Lastly, we learn that three classic GameBoy Mario games are coming next week to the Nintendo Switch Online service.

Specifically, we get Dr. Mario, Mario Golf, and Mario Tennis, and they will be released on March 12, 2024, just two days from now.

Below you can watch the brief video with Miyamoto-san and Melandri.

While it’s not directly related to Mario himself, we also get a release date for our plumber’s little brother’s upcoming game. Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD will launch on June 27, 2024.

For those unfamiliar with it, it’s a remake of the Nintendo 3DS classic Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon (which was simply titled Luigi’s Mansion 2 in Japan, but you know Nintendo’s localization team always has to do its own thing, for some reason), originally released in 2013.
