Square Enix has revealed that its Octopath Traveler series of retro-style JRPGs has reached another major sales milestone, thus likely cementing the series’ future, at least in the short term.
In a message on social media, Square Enix says that the Octopath Traveler series has hit 7 million sales across physical and digital shipments (and that number counts for global sales as well, rather than any one specific region).
The new figure means that Octopath Traveler has picked up another million sales for itself as a series since December, likely driven by the release of the latest installment Octopath Traveler 0 in that same month. Square Enix hasn’t specifically disclosed sales figures for that game yet, though.
If you’re not familiar with the Octopath Traveler series, the games are essentially a callback to the simpler times of SNES-era JRPGs, complete with a turn-based combat system, overworld and dungeon exploration, and Live a Live-style character selection.
However, the games also feature some modern concessions; the combat, for instance, is a little more complicated than the RPGs from which Octopath draws inspiration, and various other quality-of-life features make these games a touch less unforgiving than some of their predecessors.
The first game in the series, simply titled Octopath Traveler, was released for Switch back in 2018 before getting itself a launch on other platforms over the ensuing years.
A sequel, Octopath Traveler 2, was released in 2023, promising more interactions between characters, as well as a new set of stories to experience. It was followed by Octopath Traveler 0, a reworked version of free-to-play mobile adventure Champions of the Continent, last year.
These aren’t the only games to utilize Square Enix’s trademarked HD-2D style, either; others include the also-successful Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, as well as turn-based strategy title Triangle Strategy and the upcoming The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales.
