Path Of Exile 2 Players Can Expect “25 Percent Higher Frame Rates” In 0.4 Patch

Performance has always been a little bit of an issue in Path Of Exile 2, particularly as you progress further into the endgame and start grinding higher-tier maps. As you get towards tier 15 maps, the problem really compounds, and even on high-end PCs, frames can suffer. In a game where sometimes minute mistakes can get you killed, a few frame skips is enough to force you to close the game in frustration.

You won’t be able to reload the file once you’re in the endgame.

As revealed in the developer presentation for the upcoming 0.4 patch, The Last Of The Druids, Path Of Exile 2 has received some significant endgame performance upgrades – potentially increasing frame rates by up to 25 percent.

Time For Some Performance Boosts

As part of the fresh developer presentation for The Last Of The Druids, Game Director of PoE2 Jonathan Rogers went into some detail about what players can expect from the endgame performance boosts. There are two major factors to consider here: they’ve improved how your PC utilizes CPU cores to boost performance, while also reducing the number of enemies that spawn on high-tier maps.

“The primary issue is CPU load, and to address that a lot of things have been optimised, and we have done a lot of work to take advantage of more of your CPU cores. You should see frame rates at least 25% higher, and a lot less bad frame spikes during gameplay. It does make quite a big difference, especially on consoles. A lot more work in this area is ongoing, and you will continue to see performance improvements over the next few months.”

One of the issues that causes frame spikes is just how many enemies appear on your screen when tackling difficult maps. In general, the path to more difficulty in PoE2 has always been to add more enemies, but this causes problems with lag and causes your character to sometimes become immovably wedged in a massive cluster of bad guys.

Rogers goes into detail about how they’ve tuned enemy spawn rates for high tier maps. In 0.3, Grinding Gear Games did tune how many monsters appear, but kept the value scaling up to tier 15 maps. Now in 0.4, monsters will no longer scale in number, but will be harder to kill individually.

“Instead of increasing the number of monsters by 40%, they will instead drop 40% more items, grant 40% more experience, and have 40% more life, in addition to all the normal scaling that they get due to being higher level. This only applies to regular monsters, not bosses.”

This should stop you from becoming overwhelmed or dying in ways that don’t feel exactly fair, as well as helping with performance on those harder maps.

The 0.4 update also introduces the new Druid class, as well as its two Ascendancies, Oracle and Shaman, alongside an endgame temple activity, a new pinnacle boss Atziri, as well as a substantial balance pass across dozens of items. There are also over 100 new passive skills to experiment with. Time to get theorycrafting.
