The Pawmot Drop event is chugging along in Pokémon TCG Pocket, introducing several new promo cards from the Shining Revelry expansion.
Apart from an adorable full art Pawmot, the promos also feature Machamp, Floatzel, Ekans, and Bidoof.
So, how do these new cards fare in the meta? Let’s find out!
The PAWMOT card depicts a full-art version of the existing PAWMOT card from the SHINING REVELRY set. MACHAMP and BIDOOF are alternate art reprints, while FLOATZEL and EKANS are new cards with new attacks. All of them have stamps to mark them as promo cards.
Pawmot
Pawmot is the headliner of this Drop event and this card is essentially a buffed Lightning-type Druddigon, with its Counterattack ability doing the same 20 chip damage as Rough Skin and it’s a haven for Rocky Helmet. Moreover, Pawmot has a beefy 140 HP versus Druddigon’s 100 HP, and for just 2 Lightning Energy, it can do 70 DMG with Electric Punch.
The issue? The glaring issue?
Druddigon is a Basic card so you can maybe draw it right at the beginning or just a Poké Ball. Pawmot is a Stage 2 card so you’ll have to evolve Pawmi all the way so Druddigon is obviously better overall.
Yet, when partnered with Shining Revelry Pachirisu and Pokémon Communication, you may make Pawmot work with the new Pikachu EX in the background.
Therefore, Pawmot is a decent card that does offer some utility in Lightning-type decks but it’s definitely not a top pick. More of a budget Druddigon honestly.
Machamp
This Machamp card is not bad per se. The problem is the same as Pawmot: it’s a 2-Stage Pokémon. And, all the deck spots taken up by the Machamp line can ideally be taken up by better Fighting-type cards such as Gallade EX line, Lucario (EX or regular), Hitmonlee, or Marshadow. Just one for the promo collection, y’all!
Floatzel
Floatzel is a spicy card for Water decks in Emblem events, not Ranked matches. It can couple with Cyrus to do some mean damage but to be fair, the Water type is one of the strongest TCG Pocket types in general, and you’d rather fill Floatzel’s spot with some Trainer cards (there are so many of them now) instead to help Pokémon like Palkia EX, Articuno EX, Gyarados EX, etc.
Ekans
The Ekans promo is a major upgrade from the existing Ekans card that does damage for 2 Energy. This one poisons the target for only 1 Energy, essentially doing 20 DMG as long as the target’s not called Arceus EX. In other cases, this poisoning effect (something that even Shining Revelry Arbok does) is a boon for Paldean Clodsire EX, a card that’s hardly seeing use in the meta.
Yes, Genetic Apex Weezing does the job way better but Koffing doesn’t do any poisoning. Ekans does. However, this is only being kind to Ekans as it’s more useful than the rest of the promos here. With cards like Lum Berry and more importantly, Pokémon Center Lady, the Poison status is hardly meta these days. Overall, a mixed bag that definitely won’t be touching the ceiling.
Bidoof
Another filler. Bibarel EX is one of the least valuable EX cards ever so Bidoof is just an alternative art reprint of the existing Bidoof. A collectible is all it is!
This promo event has little to no relevance in the meta. Just complete the solo battles for completing those empty slots in your promo card collection and call it a day.
Happy collecting and battling, TCG Pocket-ers!
