Publishers still fear GTA 6 following recent delay

Rockstar recently announced that GTA 6 has been delayed. The new release date is now set for May 26th 2026 and while this has been good for several games releasing this year, titles that had been internally delayed to Spring 2026 are now in a tricky spot.

According to Bloomberg’s games industry expert, Jason Schreier, the GTA 6 delay has been good for a number of titles releasing this year, including The Outer Worlds 2, Ghost of Yotei, Marathon, Battlefield and the next COD game. However, at least one big multiplayer project has now found itself in a tricky position, as it had delayed to Spring 2026 to avoid GTA 6 and now risks releasing right alongside it.

The report also claims that there is ‘no guarantee’ that GTA 6 does not get delayed again, so a second delay for this particular project could prove catastrophic for keeping within budget, thus raising the amount of sales required to achieve profit. Achieving even higher sales while being in the vicinity of GTA 6 will prove a tricky task for a smaller IP.

There are also developers hoping for clarification on the release of GTA Online. While GTA 6 Story Mode has been confirmed for May 26th 2026, the next iteration of GTA Online has not been confirmed for the same date. With GTA 5, Rockstar rolled out GTA Online separately from the single-player game. If the same thing happens with GTA 6, publishers will have two major release dates to watch out for, as GTA Online has proven to be one of the most popular live multiplayer games on the market.

KitGuru Says: Do you think GTA 6 will be delayed again? We did see two delays for Red Dead 2, so it wouldn’t exactly be a first for Rockstar.
