PvE extraction shooter ‘Active Matter’ has sold half a million copies so far

A little over a month ago, development studio Matter Team officially launched their PvE-focused horror extraction shooter Active Matter, offering a blend of “realistic military” shooting alongside a creepy and “fractured multiverse”. While not all is perfect, the game has managed to resonate with a not-so-insignificant number of players, with the team confirming that Active Matter has now sold half a million copies.

Making the official announcement via a press release, studio Matter Team revealed that since its launch on the 15th of September, Active Matter has managed to sell a total of 500,000 copies. While a breakdown of sales was not provided, the team did reveal that Microsoft’s Xbox platform is “currently representing the largest share of Active Matter players” – an impressive achievement given that the game is available across Xbox, PlayStation and PC.

Commenting on the title’s early success, Anton Yudintsev – the co-founder of publisher Gaijin Entertainment – wrote: “Half a million copies is a very strong result for a hardcore game like ours. What is especially encouraging is that sales have remained remarkably steady since launch, without the sharp opening-week spike that is typical for many premium games.”

Yudintsev continued, “It shows us that there is a substantial audience looking for this kind of experience, and Active Matter is only at the beginning of its journey. We are looking forward to expanding the game with new content and features over the coming years.”

Though exact details on what will be coming in future updates was not shared, the team did offer a general overview on what to expect, with its post-launch content said to include:

  • New maps
  • New weapons
  • New monsters
  • New booses
  • Visual improvements

Given that much of the praise towards Active Matter has been regarding its PvE modes in particular, it will be interesting to see just how Matter Team chooses to balance the game’s future updates and which aspects they will prioritise.
