Randy Pitchford says that the Borderlands film “would have been way worse” if he were at the helm, as he defends the work of director Eli Roth. This comes after this film proved to be both a critical and commercial failure – something that has not put Pitchford off greenlighting more Borderlands projects.
Speaking to TheGamer at Gamescom, Pitchford joked that he would have been a poor choice of director and praised Roth’s worth. He once again defended the film, or at least those who created it, and said that creatives should not be written off because of one misstep.
Randy Pitchford Reflects On The Borderlands Movie
“It would have been way worse if I directed it,” says Pitchford. “I’m not a filmmaker. Eli Roth is an awesome filmmaker. I promise you, if I directed that movie, it’d be a disaster.”
He continues, reflecting on the film. “I love the Beatles, and there’s lots of Beatles music, [and] I just absolutely can’t listen to some of it. I think it’s unlistenable,” he says. “Should we say, You know what? You made an unlistenable song […], therefore, make no more music. That’s not the attitude, you know, keep making music. I’m glad you tried something. Yeah, go for it. Please make more.
“My attitude is, if there are great creators, artists, entertainers that have something to say and they think they can only do it with Borderlands, and they can demonstrate that they can do it, I want to enable that. We don’t always succeed, but we’ve got to keep swinging.”
So, while he isn’t saying that Borderlands 2 is good to go, he doesn’t seem to hold anything against the team that worked on the Borderlands film.
For his part, Eli Roth has said that he “could write a book” on everything that went wrong with Borderlands. More specifically, he said that COVID was a huge factor in its failure, as it made it difficult to sort out reshoots, and held everything back so much that he wasn’t even around for the final cut of the film.
