Red Dead Redemption is now available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
When Rockstar confirmed this game release last month, no one would blame you for not believing it. The rumor going around was that Rockstar was working on a Red Dead Redemption 2 port for these consoles.
But this is a worthwhile version of the game to get now. The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions will output the game to native 4K, while the Switch 2 will output at 1440p and upscale to 4K.
As reported by RockstarIntel, all versions will output to 60 FPS, with the Switch 2 version making this happen with help from Nvidia’s DLSS technology. All versions also have HDR, but the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S version will have higher resolutions and LOD comparable to the PC Ultra setting.
How To Get This Game On Your Favorite Console
Red Dead Redemption is selling for $ 50, but it is half off on some platforms and regions.
If you have PlayStation Plus Extra, or a GTA+ subscription on either Xbox or PlayStation, you get this game added to your library.
Finally, if you already own the game on PlayStation 4 or Nintendo Switch, you can avail of a free digital upgrade. You need only load your copy of the game on your console and go to the online store to name search the update.
The Weird Situation With The Xbox Version
As Twisted Voxel confirmed, Xbox owners don’t get this free update. They found this message from a Rockstar customer support agent:
Please note that the next-gen upgrade is not free for owners of the Xbox 360 version. Rockstar released a new version optimized for Xbox Series X|S, which is considered a separate purchase.
Backward-compatible titles do not automatically upgrade to next-gen versions unless the publisher offers a free upgrade program.
We verified that the Xbox store offers a digital version of this game with its own weird description. It says this:
This product entitles you to download both the digital Xbox backwards compatible version and the digital Xbox Series X|S version of this game.
At this point you may be a little confused. How is there a digital backwards compatible version that’s different from the Xbox Series X|S version?
So here’s the 411. When Double Eleven made PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch versions of Red Dead Redemption, they did not make an Xbox One version.
Instead, Xbox users could buy or upgrade their Xbox 360 version, via the Backwards Compatibility program, to play on their Xbox One version.
So as confusing as it sounds, Microsoft is actually selling the Xbox 360 version to play it on Xbox One! But to minimize the confusion, they’re also bundling it with the Xbox Series X|S version made by Double Eleven.
If our understanding of the Xbox FAQ is correct, Xbox 360 owners should still be able to download this game even if its online store has been closed. Any Xbox owners who are inclined may want to give it a try and share their results with the rest of us.
