Rockstar originally planned Grand Theft Auto VI as “Project Americas”, an early concept that would have spanned large regions across both North and South America. The idea was part of the game’s initial vision before the studio narrowed its focus to Miami and the surrounding areas.
A new feature published by Bloomberg confirms the long‑rumoured codename and outlines how the project began with a far broader map. Senior staff describe early ambitions that included multiple countries and a much larger landmass, but the scope changed as development priorities shifted and resources were redirected.
The concept of Project Americas surfaced repeatedly in leaks between 2020 and 2022, including claims that Rockstar wanted to build an entire continent rather than a single city. Bloomberg’s reporting marks the first on‑record confirmation from Rockstar staff that the idea was real, and that it remained part of internal discussions before the team scaled back the design.
Even with the reduced scope, Rockstar says the early research trips and world‑building plans helped shape GTA VI’s tone and environmental detail. Much of the groundwork laid during the Project Americas phase carried over into the final Vice City‑focused design, influencing the game’s realism and overall direction.
KitGuru says: Project Americas was one of the earliest GTA VI rumours, and it’s interesting to see Rockstar confirm that the concept existed internally before the team settled on a more focused map.
