The developer of the hit survival game Rust has revealed that the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game will soon be delisted from online storefronts. Rust was first launched by Facepunch Studios on PC in 2018, but it received a console port in 2021 thanks to co-development with Double Eleven, giving players on Xbox One and PS4 a taste of its unique approach to survival gameplay.
Despite cutthroat competition from a number of new and established rivals in the survival game genre, Rust has proved to be an enduring success. In fact, Rust player counts on Steam hit record highs in January 2025, more than a decade after its original early access launch in 2013 (with the full version released in 2018). This cultivation of a loyal and growing player base is owed in part to Rust‘s aggressive, consistent update schedule. Even where updates were fairly minor, players that picked up Rust often had something new to look forward to, while the value proposition improved constantly for newer players, who had more and more content to choose from as the game aged.

Unfortunately for some, the passage of time isn’t always a positive thing, as evidenced by a post from Double Eleven developer Perdo Silva reminding players that Rust: Console Edition (as the game is known on Xbox One and PS4) will be delisted on May 29, 2025. The reason for this is that Double Eleven are working on a major PS5 and Xbox Series upgrade for Rust for release in summer 2025. Thankfully for current players, all owners of the PS4 and Xbox One versions of Rust: Console Edition are entitled to a free upgrade to the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions when they release.
Rust: Console Edition Will Be Delisted From PS4 and Xbox One on May 29, 2025
Silva’s post further detailed the sunsetting of Rust‘s “old-gen” console versions. Starting on May 29, 2025, the PS4 and Xbox One versions of Rust: Console Editions will be removed from the PSN and Xbox storefronts. Players who already have the game installed will be able to keep playing as normal until a “final wipe” event in October 2025. Silva also hinted that Double Eleven has special plans in place for the final wipe, saying that the studio plans to make it “something special.” Current players will also have until the end of October 2025 to avail themselves of the free PS5 and Xbox Series X/S updates, transitioning officially to the “new and improved” version of what some consider one of the best co-op survival games in the scene.
Reaction to the announcement was mixed. Players on the current version of Rust: Console Edition who did not wish to buy a PS5 or Xbox Series console complained about being “left out in the cold.” However, others were happy that the old-gen editions would no longer “hold back” the game on console and looked forward to the new versions keeping Rust popular into the future.
