Sonic Rumble Peaked At 5,500 Concurrent Players Following Negative Reviews

Sonic Rumble launched yesterday, and it’s already facing backlash over its monetisation. Now, the multiplayer game is struggling to bring in players, opening to a concurrent player count of just 5,465.

At the time of writing, there are 2,624 users playing through Steam. We cannot see how many more are added to the playerbase through its mobile release, as this could possibly be the most popular platform for the game. However, when compared to other Sonic releases on Steam – games which released on far more platforms than Sonic Rumble – it becomes clear that this isn’t resonating with players as much as other titles.

Sonic Rumble Appears To Be Struggling To Bring In Players

Comparing Rumble to the other games in the Sonic series that have launched on Steam, we can see that this is the least successful in recent history. Many comfortably beat Rumble, like Sonic Frontiers, peaking at 19,181 concurrent players, and Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, with 13,630 concurrent players.

There are some that performed worse on Steam, with Sonic Superstars peaking at 2,820 and Sonic Origins at 2,668. However, it is worth noting that, like the other titles I mentioned, they are all available on a range of platforms (Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch) as well as PC, which splits the playerbase.

On the other hand, Sonic Rumble is only split between PC and mobile, and is still struggling. With that said, its monetisation practices – which frustrated enough players into leaving negative reviews – seem more geared towards the mobile market, so it might find more success there.

Gameplay-wise, Sonic Rumble feels like Fall Guys, but with Sonic characters. So, it’s a real shame if the game doesn’t go after the more traditional gaming crowd like Fall Guys did, and instead focuses on making its money through the mobile market. That would explain the lack of a console port at least, and the fact that it’s unclear if it’s going to get one further down the line.

Sonic Rumble is available now via Steam, iOS, and Android.
