Sons Of Sparta Reveals Who Atreus Was Named After

God of War: Sons of Sparta ties together the Norse and Greek sagas in some interesting ways, including with a cheeky easter egg referencing Kratos’ most iconic line, along with finally resolving a plot line from the 2018 game.

Even though it really hasn’t been that long since God of War fans had something to be excited about (Valhalla was less than three years ago now), that didn’t stop this week’s State of Play from being a treat for them in particular. The classic God of War trilogy is getting a full remake that’s seemingly a long ways off, but Sony Santa Monica had something to tide us all over until then.

I am, of course, talking about Sons of Sparta, a 2D Metroidvania that shows Kratos long before he became the God of War in Greece. Although series creator David Jaffe has made it very clear that he’s not a fan of the game at all, most people seem to be really digging Sons of Sparta and what it does for the series, even tying the two sagas together a bit.

Of Course Sons Of Sparta Has The “BOY” Meme

Atreus’ Lineage Also Gets Some Legitimate Love

The first way that Sons of Sparta shows some love for the Norse saga that’s far into Kratos’ future can be seen right as you start the game. As shared by RossTweetsGames, the easiest difficulty mode for Sons of Sparta is simply titled “Boy”, which is very clearly a reference to what has basically become Kratos’ catchphrase in recent years.

Mild spoilers for Sons of Sparta to follow now that we’ve talked about the cute early-game easter egg.

That’s not the only way that Sons of Sparta ties into the Norse saga, though, as there’s actually something a lot more lore-based. As pointed out by YouTuber DeCrazyGaming, Sons of Sparta includes a character called Eis (who is voiced by Jack Quaid, no less) who helps out Deimos and Kratos. Eis is just a nickname for this character, though.

After a boss battle against Arate, Kratos asks Eis how he’s always so happy in the face of battle. Eis replies by saying that his head tells him, “Atreus, it’s time to panic”, dropping a bit of a bombshell that this is the soldier Kratos eventually names his son after. It’s a blink and you’ll miss it moment, but it’s nice to finally see a plot point that was introduced eight years ago finally get resolved.
