Soulframe to launch into free open beta this week, as Warframe devs go head-to-head with WoW: Forever

Soulframe’s Preludes (its own version of a beta) is finally opening its doors to the whole world ahead of the Verse of the Veilands update. Starting this week, anyone who wants to can simply download the game and hop in, no invite required.

The date this happens is an interesting one: 6th November. That’s two days after the release of World of Warcraft: Forever and the same week as Old School RuneScape‘s Hardcore worlds, so it’s suddenly become a pretty packed month for MMO enthusiasts.

This comes after three years of closed testing for the fantasy action MMORPG, which players have been able to gradually see firsthand through sporadic invites. With Soulframe suffering delays since its first reveal, brief invite events have already occurred over this period. Even locked away, the game has received multiple substantial updates over the years, including new quests, Pacts (classes), factions and so on.

As for what newcomers to Soulframe can look forward to when Soulframe opens its doors, the Verse of the Veillands update is bringing a total overhaul of the map progression system this month. After the completion of an early quest, players are introduced to a corrupted landscape, the Veillands, which they must purify.

As you do so, new resources will be obtainable and side activities like fishing will be unlocked. You’ll also be able to train up a small wolf pet into a full-on mount in the process. Previously, players were just thrust into the open world to explore and figure things out as they go, so this should provide something of an introduction to the game’s open map. It won’t be totally finished when released mind you, with updates to the Veillands system coming in the future.

On top of that, there’s a new Pact called the Ode Shrike coming with the update. It’s a tricksy trapper with spikes, balloon snares, bombs and chains to disrupt enemies as you whittle them down.

Could this be enough to win people over to Digital Extreme’s newest project? Time will tell – but in the meantime its long-lasting sci-fi MMO Warframe is taking players to the Tau system in a major next step in the game’s narrative this December. It comes with a detective noir inspired main quest, playable warframe, and even an in-universe Poker equivalent.
