Today Cloud Imperium Games showcased in detail one of the major new features coming to its growing space game Star Citizen.
This time around, we take a look at Personal Hangars, which will be delivered with update alpha 3.23, which at the moment is planned for April.
The feature does basically what it says on the tin. At their home planet players will be granted an instanced personal hangar that they will be able to use as their hangout and decorate at will. Everything left in the hangar will be persistent.
On top of being a form of personal housing that players can enjoy and throw parties in, personal hangars also are at the center of a big change in cargo and inventory handling.
Players will be able to use item banks and freight elevators to “summon” inventory items and cargo that they can then load on their ships.
Speaking of ships, they won’t appear from thin air when called, but they will instead be physically lifted into the hangar via a massive lift on the floor. That being said, players will need to be careful not to fall to their untimely deaths when the elevator is open.

Star Citizen is a crowdfunded game that has been in ongoing development exclusively for PC for over a decade. Players have pledged a mind-boggling $672,827,936 in funding with 5,117,435 registered users. As usual, it’s worth mentioning that registered users don’t indicate the number of paying customers, which is unknown.
The doesn’t yet have a release date just yet, but the developers have promised a roadmap to version 1.0 (which will be the “release” version) that will be shared this year.
A single-player campaign titled Squadron 42 is also in active development and CIG recently announced that it’s feature-complete. While it’s widely speculated that a release date may be announced at the next CitizenCon in October, we don’t know for sure just yet.
