The Outer Worlds 2 zyranium gas explained and how to protect yourself

How do you protect yourself from zyranium gas in The Outer Worlds 2? Eden, and Arcadia more broadly, is fraught with perils. While you can shoot your way through hordes of Raptidons, and sneak your way through areas you definitely shouldn’t be trespassing on, zyranium gas is an environmental threat, emitted in certain areas and from robotic entities, that requires an extra layer of protection to navigate.

If you’re trying to cross the bridge on the island’s west coast in The Outer Worlds 2, you’ll have likely come across a huge patch of zyranium gas that will instantly kill you when walked over. While there are other routes to completing the space game’s The Saboteur of Paradise quest, this one helps you avoid needing to cross the large central Protectorate bridge. The good news is that you’ll only need to complete a short quest to unlock the means to saunter through it.

The Outer Worlds 2 zyranium gas

In The Outer Worlds 2, zyranium gas appears either as dusty particles or, in larger concentrations, oil-like pools that emit brassy flames. If you stand in a Zyranium cloud, you’ll slowly become poisoned by it, eventually succumbing to the ailment and dying. Likewise, attempting to run through a zyranium puddle will pretty much kill you instantly.

You can’t use The Outer Worlds 2 double jump to hop over the puddles, so you’ll have to unlock the Gas-Energy Deflection Apparatus by completing the Zyranium Collector side quest. This grants you a temporary shield for a short time, the depletion of which is accelerated by running through zyranium. To learn more about the quest and how to complete it, read on.

The Outer Worlds 2 Zyranium Collector: Repair Center location

How to complete The Outer Worlds 2 Zyranium Collector

Zyranium Collector has you gather parts for Chief Deviser Delphinia Bryant, so that she can complete her prototype Gas-Energy Deflection Apparatus against the large amount of Zyranium that has leaked into the Euphoria Coast Automech Repair Center. In return, she’ll reward you with your own protective shield. It’s a very short quest, especially if you have either Leadership 2 or Speech 3. Generally, we’d recommend putting some early points into Speech as it’s a ridiculously useful skill on Paradise Island and beyond.

To get to Euphoria Coast, head east along the path stemming from Fairfield, before turning southwards and mooching down to the coast. The Repair Center will be guarded by two Sub-Mechanists. To gain entry, you’ll first have to have picked up the Euphoria Coast Automech Repair Center Access Pass, which can be found in the Ministry of Accuracy to the west of Fairfield; you’ll have passed it if you’ve already stumbled upon the west bridge that’s plagued by zyranium gas.

The Outer Worlds 2 Zyranium Collector: the red-haired Delpinia Bryant

Once you’re inside, run all the way through to the Repair Center’s main hub. As you enter, you’ll see a medical building symbol. Head towards it, before hooking a right into the smaller repair garage (it has a set of three cogs above its single shutter door). Speak to Chief Deviser Delphinia Bryant, using the following dialog choices:

  • “So, you’re an inventor. What exactly are you working on?”
  • “You mean those clouds of fumes around the hangar outside?”
  • “Sounds useful. How’s that coming?”
  • “I’d be willing to help, if you need a hand.”

The Outer Worlds 2 Zyranium Collector: collecting samples

Delphinia hands you an instrument to collect samples from a nearby zyranium gas cloud, situated on the other side of the hub. Simply walk far enough into the cloud to proc the action box to pop up and grab the samples. Head back to Delphinia, and get through the next dialog phase with the following:

  • “And that’s where you need my help again.”
  • “That seems fortunate.”
  • “What was the Chief Mechanist’s problem with your request?”

The Outer Worlds 2 Zyranium Collector: the balding, moustached Woodrow Contos

Now, head next door to the larger workshop and speak to Chief Mechanist Woodrow Contos to procure a catalytic amplifier to finish the shield. Here are the options you’ll need to press:

  • “Delphinia is looking for a catalytic amplifier.”
  • “Auntie disabled this facility. They think you’re dead in the water. Prove them wrong.” [Leadership 2 or Speech 3]

To finish the quest, return to Delphinia, catalytic amplifier in hand, and she’ll add the finishing touch. Congratulations, you now have the Gas-Energy Deflection Apparatus.

And that’s all you need to know about zyranium gas in The Outer Worlds 2, as well as how to get the Gas-Energy Deflection Apparatus to defend yourself from it. As you continue adventuring throughout the cosmos, make sure you have your trusty The Outer Worlds 2 companions by your side to help keep you out of trouble.
