The Strongest Psychic Pokemon In Pokemon Legends: Z-A

Ever since its debut in Generation One, Psychic Pokemon have formed a noticeably strong typing, and this tradition continues in Pokemon Legends: Z-A. While this game takes a much more narrow approach with a base-game Pokedex consisting of only 230 Pokemon, there are still several strong Psychic-type Pokemon to seek out in Lumiose City.

There’s a greater variety of Psychic-type Pokemon than some of the other types in Z-A, so your choices are likely going to be tougher than with the best Dark-type Pokemon. From powerful Kalosian starters like Delphox, to Kantonian classics like Alakazam, the strongest Psychic Pokemon in Z-A feature some of the GOATs.

Alolan Raichu

Alolan Raichu is an unusual Psychic-type Pokemon that you won’t find roaming around Lumiose City. This powerful Electric and Psychic-type Pokemon from the Alola Region can only be acquired by trading your regular Kantonian Pikachu for it outside the Quasartico Inc. building toward the end of the main story.

While you can build Alolan Raichu to focus on Special Attack or Attack, this Pokemon only boasts access to two Psychic moves: Psychic and Psyshock. This lackluster move variety keeps Alolan Raichu from blossoming as a flexible option.

Espeon

Espeon has always been one of the most prolific Psychic-type Pokemon in the history of the series, but it has one major weakness in Pokemon Z-A that is hard to overcome: the lack of a Mega Evolution.

While Mega Evolution isn’t the be-all, end-all, it’s a helpful boon for Rogue Mega Pokemon battles.

Even without a Mega Evolution, Espeon stands out thanks to a varied moveset that features supportive options alongside solid damage potential via moves like Psychic.

Starmie

Starmie might be one of the easiest powerful Water-type Pokemon to get in the game, as you’ll find a Staryu early in Wild Zone 2 and only need to run over to the Stone Emporium to evolve this Pokemon into Starmie.

Once you do, you’ll have one of the best Water-type Pokemon in the game, with equally impressive Psychic-type moves. Psybeam, Psychic, and Zen Headbutt are some of the most useful Psychic-type moves to choose from in Starmie’s Mega Evolution-supported arsenal.

Alakazam

Alakazam edges ahead of Starmie thanks to being slightly more offensively potent, while notching similar defensive frailty as the major downfall of this Pokemon. Luckily, access to its incredible Mega Evolution makes Alakazam one of the best glass cannons in the game.

Unfortunately, you can expect Alakazam to crumple like a wet sheet of paper under the cutting pressure of any physical move, especially one that it’s particularly weak against, like Crunch.

Delphox

Delphox isn’t a particularly tanky Pokemon, but this Pokemon’s varied moveset makes it one of the most dangerous dual threats in the game. Delphox’s list of attacking Fire and Psychic-type moves goes on and on, including staples like Psychic and utility moves like Heal Block and Light Screen.

You might not be able to survive a multitude of hits without deploying tricks like Light Screen, but Delphox’s combination of support and damage moves makes it a much more versatile member of your team than Alakazam.

Gallade

Gallade earned a spot among the strongest Fighting-type Pokemon in Legends: Z-A, and it’s back for more, as the Psychic portion of its moveset stands out with an unusual assortment of Psychic-type moves, like Psycho Cut.

Unfortunately, Psycho Cut (and technically Psyshock) is the only option that capitalizes on Gallade’s strong Attack stat, but its access to Fighting-type options and other utility moves makes this Pokemon a versatile choice to add to your team with massive attacking upside if it needs to step up to sweep.

Metagross’ Psychic-type functionality benefits from being one of the best Steel-type Pokemon in the game, thanks to its impressive defensive capabilities combined with lethal attacking force. Psycho Cut and Zen Headbutt are the two main Psychic-type moves to use, but they don’t offer the highest base power.

Thankfully, Metagross’s high Attack stat makes these moves hit incredibly hard, and its access to a variety of moves offers plenty of options to use in between your Psychic-type strikes. However, a lack of viable moves means one Pokemon surpasses Metagross’s raw power.

Gardevoir

If you thought that Gardevoir was just one of the strongest Fairy-type Pokemon in Z-A thanks to its deadly combination of Draining Kiss and Moonblast, think again. This versatile Pokemon can also learn Psychic, Future Sight, Confusion, and Calm Mind to fill out its broad Psychic movepool.

You’ll receive a Ralts with a Gardevoirite via Mystery Gift just for starting the game, so it couldn’t be much easier to add the best Psychic-type Pokemon in Z-A to your team; you just need to evolve it into a Gardevoir.
