Lara Croft is getting a new visual makeover. A new game reimagines the iconic adventurer for a new generation of gamers. The new look arrives as the franchise prepares for another major adaptation, with Sophie Turner portraying Lara in the upcoming Tomb Raider TV series.

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is a new upcoming game in the franchise, developed by Crystal Dynamics in collaboration with Flying Wild Hog. The game brings the original 1996 Tomb Raider gaming experience to modern consoles like the PlayStation 5.

Using updated technology, the developers have kept Lara’s signature appearance intact. But they have added more realistic details, including her hair, skin, clothing, and facial features, to her character model. These new details were shown in a 30th Anniversary trailer.

How Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis balances realism with Lara Croft’s iconic design

Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog wanted to bring elements from different eras in the franchise when developing Legacy of Atlantis. They also hoped not to lose the core identity of the game and characters defined for the past 30 years.

According to PlayStation’s Blog, the original design of the games served as the ultimate blueprint for the team’s decisions. When speaking about creating a balance between the previous games and the new one, Senior Character Concept Artist at Flying Wild Hog, Aleksandra Skiba, said, “You want them to feel believable, but you also want them to look recognizable. You have to figure out what you can do now to make them better.”

Moreover, John Stafford, Narrative Director at Crystal Dynamics, added, “What we kept: Lara’s intelligence, fearlessness, and thrill-seeking spirit remain completely intact. What we evolved: we deepened her emotional depth and relationships without losing her confidence. What we reimagined: we unified the mythic, grounded, and larger-than-life tones of multiple Tomb Raider eras into one Lara.”

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis will officially launch on February 12, 2027, with pre-orders open now.
