Check out this new work in progress demo footage from the upcoming John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando developed in Swarm Engine. This new gameplay footage has been provided by Focus and edited by us after we played the game at Gamescom 2025 (no commentary). This supernatural horror action new single player co-op first person FPS zombie slasher hero looter shooter with vehicular combat will remind you of Left 4 Dead!

First impressions:
The real star of the show seems to be the Swarm Engine while playing Toxic Commando for the first time. If it can truly handle thousands of enemies at once without turning into a slideshow, that’s a huge selling point. It was already used before in World War Z and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 for the same purpose. It’s the kind of tech that could elevate the gameplay from just another shooter to a truly chaotic, overwhelming experience.
We can’t help but compare this game to Back 4 Blood, and frankly, it needs to be more than just a clone. However, the involvement of John Carpenter is the key. His reputation for creating tense, atmospheric horror is what sets this game apart and keeps our anticipation high. The vehicle combat and different character classes we tried in two 4 co-op matches were very good, hinting at more varied gameplay than just running and gunning. We’re hoping this is more than just a gimmick and that these elements are well-integrated into the core experience when it launches in 2026.

These commando troopers should've worn combat helmets if they wanted to protect their head against zombies' rampage. Although they are spec-ops soldiers who get dangerous missions, they didn't have enough combat gear.

I’ve been hyped for this game. It looks fun but I wish we could see some gameplay of the more calm moments of the game, because I love chaos but too much chaos could take away the horror elements and become repetitive/boring.
