While Lucasfilm has recently expressed desires to expand its Star Wars video games beyond your standard AAA affair, it appears as though there is still space for such offerings within the wider canon. According to multiple reports, almost a decade on from the controversial launch of Star Wars Battlefront II, EA is finally gearing up to round out the trilogy.
Earlier this week, as part of the Game Mess Mornings podcast, notable industry insider Jeff Grubb claimed that Disney/Lucasfilm has been looking for a development partner to work on a potential Star Wars Battlefront III.
At the time, it was stated that the two main studios “circling” the project were DICE (who worked on the prior two games) as well as Bungie (who partnered with Star Wars last year to release the Destiny 2 expansion ‘Renegades’).
In a surprise revelation coming from an unexpected source however, Joe Brammer – the CEO of Wardogs studio BULKHEAD – added to the rumours, claiming that “DICE and from what I’ve heard Respawn are working on Battlefront 3. Not sure what that means for Battlefield.”
Given that EA published the previous two Battlefront games, and that DICE was in charge of their development, it makes sense that the publisher would round out the trilogy which it had revived back in 2015. Respawn Entertainment is of course also familiar with Star Wars and sci-fi first-person multiplayer shooters, having developed the Titanfall and Apex Legends franchises (and have produced their own successful Star Wars sub-series).
Regardless of who winds up in charge of the project, there is no denying that a hunger exists for a new entry in the Battlefront series. All that said, hopefully its monetisation winds up being better than that of Battlefront II at launch.
KitGuru says: What did you think of the rebooted Battlefront games? Would you like to see a 3rd entry made? Between the studios listed above, which one would you personally want to see take charge of the project? Let us know down below.
