If you’re reading this, we hope you like video game movies, because in the last week alone, a sequel to A Minecraft Movie was announced for 2027, along with some rather creepy and cryptic short films from Nintendo as part of its Nintendo Pictures initiatives. Now, a third Mortal Kombat movie has been confirmed.
Except, there’s just one teensy tiny problem — Mortal Kombat 2 hasn’t even been released.
As Long As There’s No Cole Young, I’m All For A Mortal Kombat 3
As first reported by Deadline, New Line Cinema, one of Warner Bros.’ big studios, is set to turn the Mortal Kombat franchise into a trilogy. Jeremy Slater, who’s been responsible for writing Mortal Kombat 2, will apparently return to pen the trifecta.
According to Deadline’s sources, WB is “very high” on Mortal Kombat 2, a movie that was supposed to release this month but was instead delayed into May 2026. That’s some serious confidence, considering the first movie didn’t exactly light the box office on fire.
The confidence is apparently spurred by the massive support for the red-band trailer, which, per Deadline, tallied 107 million views in a 24-hour period, an all-time record for a red-band trailer, or a trailer that features mature content for a movie that will presumably be Rated-R.
Just as the movie was being confirmed by Deadline, the movie was confirmed during New York Comic Con, helping make things as official as it gets.
Speaking to the crowd, Slater said, “Our friends at New Line and Warner Bros. are so happy with this movie. They are so excited. They are so convinced that there is a giant fanbase waiting for it that they have already hired me to start writing the next installment of Mortal Kombat.”
Like we said up top, we hope you’re excited for more video game movies, because the train isn’t stopping anytime soon.
