Where to Find Iron in Graveyard Keeper 2

Iron is a staple resource in most crafting survival games, and that is no different in Graveyard Keeper 2. The metal is required to craft more advanced gear, helping players build their economy and progress through the story. Early on, Iron rocks can be found around the player’s base, but they will not be able to mine them straight away, needing to level up their Metallurgy stat. As Iron does not grow back, players will then need to find other Iron locations in Graveyard Keeper 2 and eventually come up with a permanent solution for infinite Iron.

Where To Find Iron In Graveyard Keeper 2

Graveyard Keeper 2 - Iron Rock

Iron rocks thankfully aren’t too hard to find in the area around the Inquisitor’s Base, otherwise known as home. In the early game, players needn’t look further than this and should obtain enough Iron Ore to get them set up. The main problem is that this ore cannot be mined until players meet the Metallurgy stat requirement.

Reaching Level 3 Metallurgy To Mine Iron

Graveyard Keeper 2 - Metallurgy Masteries

To actually mine Iron, players will need a Metallurgy Mastery rating of 3. To reach this, you will want to craft and equip a Bronze Hammer. While you actually mine with a Pickaxe, the hammer boosts your Metallurgy by +2.

To reach 3, you will also need to unlock the first Metallurgy Perk, which grants +1 Mastery. To do so, you will want to complete Metallurgy Inspirations, such as destroying broken barrels, mining Copper Nuggets, and crafting Bronze items.

Other Iron Locations

Once players have fully mined all the Iron Ore around their base, they will need to gain access to the Forest and the Swamp, where more can be found. You’ll need to progress through the story to reach these locations, both of which also have a finite amount of Iron, meaning they are not long-term solutions.

If you rebuild a smithy shop in the town, you’ll also be able to buy and sell Iron there.

Smelting Iron In Graveyard Keeper 2

Once you’ve mined some Iron Ore, you’ll want to smelt it into Iron Ingots. This can be done at a Furnace.

You will need lots of fuel for the smelting process, and many other things in Graveyard Keeper 2. The recipe for smelting Iron is as follows.

  • 4 Iron Ingots: 3 Iron Ore + 30 Fuel

As it takes a while to smelt, you can either pop back constantly or assign a zombie worker to watch over it, and with a long queue, they will keep the smelting going, as long as they have a porter zombie, the resources, and chest space.

Iron can also be smelted at a Smithy in the Factory beneath the player’s base later on in the game, with Coal and Iron Ore.

Zombies Can Mine Infinite Iron In Graveyard Keeper 2

Eventually, players will run out of Iron deposits to mine, and unlike berries, it does not grow back. Thankfully, there is an Iron mine that can be accessed after using dynamite in the northern section of the Forest. However, due to deadly fumes, it cannot be entered by mortals. There’s also lots of rubble in the area to clear.

This is where your helpful zombie workers in Graveyard Keeper 2 come into play. You will need to unlock Zombie Mining on the Metallurgy Tech Tree.

Setting Up The Zombie Mine

In the mine, you will want to build:

  • Zombie Miner: 2 Wooden Planks + 4 Bricks
  • Porter Station: 2 Wooden Planks + 4 Bricks

You can then place a zombie at each of these stations. The miner zombie requires a Pickaxe, ideally an Iron one, as it provides better stats. The miner should also have lots of red skulls, allowing them to unlock Perks, such as Zombie Miner.

The porter doesn’t need any stats, and they will carry Iron Ore and Coal back to your base.

You’ll also want to build a few more chests to increase storage, and you can also build a second Zombie Miner station.
