Marvel’s Wolverine on PS5 has debuted with the lowest score for a Marvel title developed by Insomniac Games since Spider-Man. The game was first announced in 2021 and is scheduled to release next week exclusively on the console.

At the time of writing, Marvel’s Wolverine has scored a 77 on Metacritic. In comparison, Insomniac’s previous Marvel games all scored well above. The only Marvel game that got a lower score by Insomniac was Spider-Man 2’s PC port, which scored 76.

How Wolverine compares to Insomniac’s Spider-Man games

Most of the game’s reviews have criticized the game’s combat mechanics while mostly praising its story and characters. Giant Bomb’s review criticized the game’s linear structure and gameplay ideas borrowed from other AAA titles. “With exploration removed, the remaining storytelling and combat pillars of Insomniac’s house style struggle to support the studio’s ideas,” wrote the outlet in its statement.

Alternatively, ComingSoon’s Tyler Treese praised the game’s thrilling set pieces and character moments. “While Marvel’s Wolverine has several issues, it’s the epic motorcycle chases and key action moments that will stick with players after the credits roll,” giving it 8/10.

IGN gave the game a 6/10, concluding that the game’s “slick and satisfying combat wears thin well before its conclusion,” although the reviewer praised the game’s strong character work and writing.

Similarly, GameSpot’s review also gave it a 6/10, adding that its gameplay does not provide anything beyond the basics of what players expect. The review also added that the game’s combat feels weightless, and it doesn’t play to Insomniac’s strengths in the genre.

Wolverine is the next chapter in Insomniac’s original Marvel universe, which started in 2018 with Marvel’s Spider-Man. The game follows its eponymous hero as a member of Team X, which includes mutants such as Mystique, Sabretooth, and Nathaniel Essex.

The game also includes key X-Men characters like Jean Grey, along with villains such as Omega Red, Lady Deathstrike, and more. Wolverine is played by Liam McIntyre in the game, while Troy Baker plays Essex.

Marvel’s Wolverine launches on September 15, 2026, exclusively on PlayStation 5.
