Xbox June Showcase Announced, Totally Not Call of Duty Direct Teased

Xbox has announced its summer showcase plans, and the company is also teasing a “mysterious” (read: fairly obvious) post-show Direct for the same day.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Xbox announced earlier today that its summer showcase will take place on June 9th at 10am Pacific (that’s 1pm Eastern and 6pm BST).

Immediately following that show, a “[REDACTED] Direct” presentation will take place, and while the name of the game and the publisher have been covered, it’s pretty easy to guess what we’re in for.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure this one out.

The image depicts a stylized orange wolf over what appears to be an American dollar bill. The colors are strongly reminiscent of the Call of Duty: Black Ops sub-series, lending credence to the rumors that the next Call of Duty game will be Black Ops Gulf War.

Additionally, as pointed out by Gematsu and a number of others, what little can be seen of the publisher logo in the bottom-right of the teaser image lines up perfectly with Activision’s logo.

The Verge’s Tom Warren, meanwhile, citing “sources familiar with the company’s plans”, confirms that the game to be revealed is indeed the next major Call of Duty installment.

It would make sense if this is what Microsoft is gearing up to reveal. After all, Call of Duty is technically a Microsoft property now, so an Xbox showcase would be the perfect place to unveil the next entry in the series.

The last game in the Black Ops sub-series was 2020’s Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.

Of course, nothing has been officially unveiled yet, so we don’t know anything about what’s tentatively being called Black Ops Gulf War. Will it have a campaign? We just don’t know.

It looks like we’ll have to tune into the Xbox showcase to find out, at any rate. You can do so on Sunday, June 9th, at 10am Pacific or your local equivalent. Stay tuned for more.
