Windows 11 Preview adds Cloud Rebuild to reinstall OS and drivers

Microsoft has introduced Cloud Rebuild, a recovery feature that wipes and reinstalls Windows 11 while pulling fresh system drivers directly from Windows Update. Rolling out via optional preview update KB5127936 for Windows 11 25H2 and 26H2, the tool can retrieve a clean OS image even when the local installation refuses to boot.

According to VideoCardz, users can initiate a Cloud Rebuild through Settings > System > Recovery as “Rebuild PC” whenever the OS boots normally. When startup fails repeatedly, the machine drops into the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), where Cloud rebuild appears under the Troubleshoot menu. Unlike the existing Cloud download setting in the Reset menu, Microsoft states that Cloud Rebuild doesn’t rely on an intact local Windows installation.

Initiating the process completely wipes the primary drive, erasing installed software, local files, and user accounts, with only cloud-synced data surviving. For machines being repurposed or sold, a sanitize mode provides a secure disk erase. Moreover, system administrators can trigger rebuilds remotely using the Recovery CSP.

Executing the process requires a functioning WinRE partition and active network connectivity via Wi-Fi or Ethernet using pre-installed manufacturer drivers. WinRE can now reuse saved Wi-Fi profiles from Windows, though Microsoft notes the rebuild will fail if a system’s drivers aren’t published on Windows Update.

KitGuru says: Having an official recovery option that pulls fresh drivers alongside a clean image could save plenty of headaches when troubleshooting broken boots. Do you keep a dedicated Windows installer USB around, or will you start to rely on Cloud Rebuild from now on?
